Stephen Aziz, a former Sunderland kitman, has spoken out against Jason Steele.

Steele, now 33, played briefly for Sunderland during the 2017/18 season, making him a familiar face to supporters.

Steele was recruited by Sunderland before of the Championship season, although he only appeared in 15 games, keeping two clean sheets as the Black Cats were relegated to League One.

After a disastrous tenure at the Stadium of Light, Steele joined Brighton and did not return to the league for three seasons.

Steele is now the Premier League’s number one.

Stephen Aziz’so delighted’ for Jason Steele following Sunderland horror

During a recent interview with We Are Sunderland, former Black Cats kit man Aziz discussed several topics, including the Netflix documentary Sunderland ‘Til I Die, which included Steele.

Netflix filmed their relegation campaign and troubles on and off the pitch, with Steele being one of several players targeted for criticism by supporters on social media.

Aziz remarked about Steele:

“Football isn’t the huge, glamorous show that everyone thinks it is. I believe they portrayed the true, behind-the-scenes experience of the boys who were truly experiencing it during those difficult times. You look at Jason Steele today, he’s soaring in the Premier League, yet he was abused like a dog at Sunderland.”

“I’m so happy to see him playing in the Premier League and doing so well.”

Steele has played 15 Premier League games this season, keeping two clean sheets, and has also competed in the Europa League against Roma, Marseille, and Ajax.

A horrible moment in Sunderland’s history, but Steele has won.

For Sunderland fans, the relegation season and the four years that followed in League One seem like a horrible dream.

Instead, they’re currently striving to get back into the Premier League following a seven-year exile. However, recent performances under Mike Dodds have been dismal.

And Steele’s return to the Premier League with Brighton demonstrates that there was always a competent goalkeeper at Sunderland, but it was a difficult place to be.

As Aziz mentions, he endured a lot of criticism, which would have undoubtedly harmed his confidence, but he’s now establishing his Premier League and Europa League qualities with an outstanding Brighton team.

Sunderland’s playing staff, backroom crew, and ownership have all seen significant changes since then.

Sunderland has lost six consecutive games for the first time since 2006, despite a positive approach and plan.

Sunderland return to play against QPR this weekend.
