On Wednesday, the first day of the NFL’s new league year, Jimmy Garoppolo, the quarterback, and Hunter Renfrow, the former Pro Bowl slot receiver, will be released by the Las Vegas Raiders, sources informed ESPN.
With general manager Tom Telesco and coach Antonio Pierce in the new front office, the Raiders will have more over $19 million in salary cap room saved thanks to the departures.
When Josh McDaniels was the coach and Dave Ziegler was the general manager, Garoppolo signed a three-year, $72.75 million free agency contract with Las Vegas last March, with $33.75 million guaranteed. Garoppolo was scheduled to receive a $11.25 million roster bonus this coming Sunday, but he also has the option to forfeit his $11.25 million basic salary guarantee for the 2024 season because the league suspended him for two games last month for breaking the NFL’s rules against using performance-enhancing drugs.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the infraction was allegedly caused by Garoppolo taking a prescription drug without a legitimate NFL therapeutic use exception.
Garoppolo is free to sign with any team at this time, but he will miss his new team’s opening two regular-season games because he is not contesting the ban..
After suffering a concussion and a back injury, Garoppolo signed with the Raiders needing surgery on his left foot (his contract wasn’t official until he passed a physical). He finished with 1,205 passing yards, 7 touchdown passes, and 9 interceptions, which led the league when Pierce benched him in favour of rookie Aidan O’Connell following the Halloween night firings of McDaniels and Ziegler. Along with his passer rating (77.7) and QBR (34.2), Garoppolo’s 65.1 completion percentage was a career low for a season in which he played at least six games. His career-high interception percentage of 5.3 was also achieved.
The day following the season finale, Garoppolo stated, “Honestly, I just want to get back to playing.” “For that reason, I engage in this game. I enjoy winning. To be honest, I think my main purpose here is to go out there and win. As a football player, you have to learn to live with it. That’s not what everyone want. Some individuals are just interested in data and similar items. All I actually want is to compete and succeed. I have a lot of fun doing it. That is our purpose in being here.
Veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew was signed by the Raiders via free agency.
With his game-changing fumble in overtime against the Arizona Cardinals that was recovered for a walk-off touchdown in Week 2 of the 2022 season, Renfrow, on the other hand, appeared to lose favour with McDaniels’ staff. On the play, he suffered a concussion.
Renfrow was a Pro Bowl player the previous season, recording 103 receptions for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns—the third-highest number of receptions in a single season in team history. However, Renfrow did not score last season despite catching 61 catches for 585 yards and two touchdowns in 2022 and 2023.
Entering the 2022 season, the 2019 fifth-round draft pick agreed to a two-year, $32 million contract with a $21 million guarantee.
Earlier on Wednesday, Renfrow thanked supporters on social media, writing, “Raider Nation, thank you for welcoming me and my family over the last five years.” It was like coming home, from Oakland to Vegas. Without the daily inspiration from my coaches and teammates, I would not be the person I am today. Five years passed by quickly.”Raider Once, Raider Always.”
Additionally, it was anticipated that the Raiders would declare defensive tackle Jerry Tillery and quarterback Brian Hoyer officially released.
