‘What I Wanted To Do!’ Chip Kelly Opens Up About Joining Ohio State

What I Wanted To Do! Chip Kelly Opens Up About Joining Ohio State.

When it came down to it, new Ohio State Buckeyes defensive coordinator Chip Kelly simply wanted to teach football.

Chip Kelly surprised the football world by leaving his job as head coach of the UCLA Bruins to become the Ohio State Buckeyes’ new offensive coordinator.

Kelly’s decision was blasted by the Los Angeles media and some national analysts because it was so unusual.

However, it was ultimately Kelly’s decision, and he made it based on his career goals.

“I was at a point in time where I could make a decision on what I wanted to do,” Kelly told Pat McAfee.“I truly like instructing. I absolutely love being among the players. I absolutely love the bonds you form in the conference room…The ability to come here and just coach football without having to perform the things that a head coach is currently required to do in college football appealed to me.”

Kelly was clearly dissatisfied with the present condition of collegiate football.

Unlike even a decade ago, head coaches are expected to not only sustain and administer a program, as well as go on the road recruiting for days or weeks at a time, but they must also compete in the NIL and transfer portal.

In fact, being a head coach at the collegiate level can be more demanding on a daily basis than being an NFL coach.

Kelly can now focus on what he enjoys most: calling offenses and mentoring quarterbacks, free of the stresses that come with being a head coach.

“I’m excited just to do my job,” Kelly stated. “I don’t have to do anything else. I don’t have to do the other things that a head coach must do. I simply get to coach quarterbacks and be around them every day. Our quarterbacks are fantastic.”
