Rangers have a surprise Roofe heir who's out on loan

The gifted centre-forward has piqued interest during his short departure.

Glasgow Rangers, led by Philippe Clement, advanced to the SFA Cup semi-finals after a 2-0 victory against Hibernian on Sunday.

John Lundstram and Fabio Silva, who joined on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers in January, scored the goals, bringing the Gers one step closer to another trophy this season.

While the Light Blues aim for victory in the Scottish Premiership, Europa League, and SFA Cup, the Belgian manager may also consider the club’s contract issue this summer.

Lundstram, Kemar Roofe, Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack, Leon Balogun, and Jon McLaughlin all scheduled to become free agents later this year. It’s unclear what the future holds for them at Ibrox.

Clement, on the other hand, must allow Roofe to go when his contract expires since his fitness concerns have made him an unreliable member of the squad, and the Gers may already have a surprise heir to the striker in Sam Lammers, who is presently on loan.

Why should the Rangers release Kemar Roofe?

The 31-year-old centre-forward has suffered from continuous injury issues during his time with the Scottish giants, which is why the club should let him go.

Roofe has missed 96 competitive matches for Rangers due to eight different injuries since the 2020/21 season began.

The seasoned striker has missed at least 12 matches in the past five seasons, including his spell with Anderlecht in 2019/20.

This demonstrates how unpredictable he has been throughout his career, particularly during his time at Ibrox, and why Clement cannot trust on him to be a valuable option in the team, since the manager seldom has him available for selection in games.

To make matters worse, Roofe has failed on the field when he has had the opportunity to play this season. The former Leeds United player has only scored twice in 19 first-team appearances in all competitions for the Gers, after a return of two goals in six outings during the 2022/23 season.

Since joining Glasgow in 2020, the Jamaican international has scored 38 goals and provided seven assists in 97 appearances.

The significant figure to note here, however, is that he has only played 97 matches for the Light Blues, one more than the amount of fixtures he has missed due to injury (96).

To miss practically every other game on average over a nearly four-year period, combined with his dismal goal-scoring form this season, is sufficient evidence to argue that Rangers should not renew his contract.

Clement must now decide whether to release him at the end of the season, and the Belgian manager might find a surprising successor to his position in the team by giving Lammers an opportunity to rehabilitate his career at Ibrox following a disappointing first half of the season.

Sam Lammers’ Rangers career statistics

Former Gers head coach Michael Beale signed the versatile attacker from Serie A club Atalanta for a reputed amount of £3.5 million during the previous summer transfer window.

Despite being likened to Ruud van Nistelrooy, the left-footed forward struggled to make an impression in Scotland.

Lammers has only two goals and one assist in 17 Premiership games (ten starts) with the Light Blues, indicating inconsistent performance in the final third.

The 26-year-old failed to score or assist in six Europa League group stage matches and four League Cup games.

In 31 appearances for the club in all competitions, including Champions League qualifications at the start of the season, he only had two goals and two assists, averaging one goal or assist every 7.8 matches.

The marksman only played one match as a center-forward and spent the bulk of his career as an offensive midfielder or second striker.

His performance as a number nine since leaving the club to join FC Utrecht on loan as their starting striker implies that Rangers wasted an opportunity by not playing him there.

In January, the striker was loaned to the Dutch club for the remainder of the season. He has made nine appearances as a center forward.

Lammers has played consistent minutes at his native position for the first time in the 2023/24 season, leading to improved performance in the final third.

In nine Eredivisie games with Utrecht, he has two goals and three assists, outperforming his 17 Premiership outings with the Gers.

As shown in the table above, Lammers has provided significantly more quality at the top of the pitch in the Netherlands as a centre-forward than he did in Scotland as a number ten or winger.

Dutch TV commentator Kees Luijckx praised the 6’3 whiz as a “fantastic” asset for Utrecht. He has been more clinical in front of goal, with zero wasted ‘big opportunities’ and nearly four times as many important passes per game.

As a result, Clement must take note of the 26-year-old star’s remarkable performance for the Dutch side and provide him the opportunity to audition for the job of Roofe’s succession in the summer.

Lammers has yet to play frequently as a striker for Rangers, having been deployed as a number ten, which is why he may be a surprise replacement for the former Leeds number nine, given the Ibrox fans have had little opportunity to see him perform in that capacity.
