Jimmy Garoppolo is already being replaced by the Las Vegas Raiders after just six starts with the franchise. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini posted on March 12th, X, indicating that the team intends to cut the quarterback shortly.
It is hardly shocking to learn that Garoppolo will be cut by the Raiders. Since learning last month that he will miss two games the following season due to a violation of the league’s performance-enhancing substance policy, this was expected. Last season, Garoppolo agreed to a three-year, $72.75 million contract with Las Vegas, but it soon became apparent that he wouldn’t fit in.
After battling injuries early on, the quarterback was benched in favour of Aidan O’Connell. Garoppolo is no longer a fit, especially since Josh McDaniels is no longer the head coach. The Raiders will have approximately $11.3 million in salary cap room after removing the quarterback. The team is changing things up in the quarterback room, and Brian Hoyer is also being cut. Although Garoppolo was once thought to be a reliable starter, it seems like his injury problems are beginning to catch up with him. There was no incentive for the Raiders to hold onto Gardner Minshew once they signed him. It will be intriguing to observe if Garoppolo succeeds.
Which Teams Could Be Interested in Jimmy Garoppolo?
Since the Raiders now lack a reliable starting quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo’s departure from the team is not good news for his market worth. Although Garoppolo guided the 49ers to a Super Bowl participation, his reputation is suffering greatly.
He was leading the NFL in interceptions at the end of the previous season when he was benched. He should still have some suitors, even though it’s unlikely that a team will sign him to be the unquestioned starter this offseason. The Minnesota Vikings might be a worthy opponent. Sam Darnold was recently signed, but his performance isn’t strong enough to guarantee that he would start.
Although Garoppolo has won a lot of games in the past, he is probably a quarterback on par with Darnold at this stage in his career. There’s a chance that the New England Patriots will get back together. Garoppolo is also acquainted with Mike McDaniel, the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. As Tua Tagovailoa’s backup, he might make sense.
What’s Next for Aidan O’Connell?
It looks like Aidan O’Connell will be the only quarterback back from the previous campaign. The Raiders don’t seem to be confident in the concept of starting him, even though he finished the season 3-1 and threw eight touchdowns to zero interceptions during that time.
As of right now, Gardner Minshew ought to be the favourite to start. While $25 million over two years isn’t exactly starter money, it is a sizable sum for a backup from the Raiders. That being said, O’Connell still has a chance to start the next season.
Antonio Pierce, the head coach, might have a soft place for the inexperienced quarterback. The Raiders have a good chance of selecting a quarterback early in this year’s draft. It’s hard to predict who the team’s starting quarterback will be in 2024 until the draft is over, but they almost certainly won’t have a solid answer before training camp begins.
