Nottingham City Council commissioners could get involved with Forest talks after City Ground relocation claim

Tony McArdle says he and his team “will get more involved” in the Nottingham Forest lease talks to understand the situation better

Following rumours that Nottingham Forest would have to vacate the City Ground, the lead commissioner assigned to Nottingham City Council says his team might engage in talks with the club. It was recently verified that negotiations to extend the club’s lease have come to a standstill because the municipal council, which owns the property on which the historic stadium is located, is attempting to guarantee the “best value for taxpayers.”

Although supporters have called the plan “unthinkable,” the standoffish negotiations have cast doubt on Nottingham Forest’s City Ground reconstruction. The club may even decide to vacate the stadium. The main commissioner for Nottingham City Council now states that, in an emergency, he and the other two commissioners might take over.

“We haven’t gotten involved in the detail of that one yet,” stated Tony McArdle. There is a negotiation going on between two opposing sides. That is a well-known practice in local governance worldwide. Where that one ends up, I’m not sure.

We want to learn more about it, so we will become more interested with it. We are acutely aware of the perceived risk on both ends.”

According to Nottingham City Council, discussions with Forest on its future at the stadium have covered a number of options, including extending the present lease, negotiating a new one, or permanently selling the freehold. The council claimed it did not fulfil its obligation to secure the best value for taxpayers, which prevented a 2019 deal from moving forward. As a result, the authority hired specialised agents to provide guidance on the subject.

Mr. McArdle, who was appointed on February 22nd for a two-year term, states that he does not now plan to exercise all of the commissioners’ authority. These authorities include the ability to propose changes to the council’s budget in addition to the ability to hire and fire council officers.

Rather, Mr. McArdle states that he and his group will only intervene if the council deems it necessary. “It seems to me the authority is engaging, it’s doing so in a very sensible, constructive way with the taxpayers’ interest at heart,” the commissioner continued regarding the Nottingham Forest scenario. A different proposal has been made by the club, and talks are currently underway.

“We would be pleased to assist if we could in that way. We’re not now involved in that matter, but I’m extremely aware of the strains on both sides. I’m sure they’ll let us know if we feel the need to be or if someone else feels the same way.”

“The council remains committed to further negotiations to find the best way forward and has offered to continue dialogue,” a spokesman for Nottingham City Council previously stated. We will collaborate with Forest to find a solution that satisfies both their goals and our legal obligations because we recognise their urgency and their desire to grow in a way that will benefit the community.”

The Peter Taylor Stand will be demolished and rebuilt with twice as many seats as it currently has, as part of Forest’s ambition. Rushcliffe Borough Council granted approval in the summer of 2022, subject to a number of requirements, including the River Trent’s removal and relocation of boathouses.

Since then, proposals have been made to build additional hospitality pods to occupy two of the ground’s corners. If granted, this would temporarily expand the stadium’s capacity.

The team is anxiously awaiting word on their penalty for violating the Premier League’s sustainability and profitability regulations. On March 7 and 8, Forest started to defend against the charge before a three-person independent committee.

The Reds, led by head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, are in danger of dropping out of the Premier League. Forest is only three points above of Luton Town, who are currently in the final relegation slot, in 17th place.

On Wednesday, March 13, the Hatters play Bournemouth. On Saturday, March 16, they play Forest at Kenilworth Road in a crucial six-point match.
