A formal statement about the hostile behaviour of Newcastle United supporters has been made by the club.
It is evident from the statement (see below) that they are focusing their attention on a very small group.
But they claim that because of the actions of a small percentage of Newcastle United supporters, it has escalated into a significant problem this season.
Official NUFC statement dated March 12, 2024, condemning aggressive Newcastle United supporters:
“Fans are reminded to show their support in a positive way to ensure that football is inclusive, safe, and enjoyable for everyone in light of recent instances of abusive and discriminatory conduct.”
While the great majority of Newcastle United supporters cheer on their teams in an open and friendly manner, a regrettable minority of people have acted in a discriminatory and/or abusive manner, which is against the club’s core values, the Ground Regulations, and occasionally the law.
The team would like to utilise this chance to remind all fans that prejudice and abuse are not tolerated at Newcastle United.
“We are blessed to have so many incredible supporters who are exemplary in representing our club and city,” stated Darren Eales, CEO of the club. Regretfully, a tiny percentage of people have let them down this season by acting in a repugnant manner that we will not stand for.
“This includes two incidents of employees being spat at, abusive behaviour directed towards our box office staff, racial abuse directed towards our players and stewarding staff, and persistent and vicious online abuse.” We’ll take all required precautions to keep our players, staff, and supporters safe.
“Any form of abusive behaviour, whether it is aimed at players, coaches, fans, or employees, is not acceptable, and I have no doubt that the Newcastle United community will unite to condemn it—’United as One.'”
The team takes seriously its obligations to promote diversity within Newcastle United and the larger football community.
The club shall respond right away in accordance with its internal policies and the Premier League Commitment Regarding Abusive and Discriminatory Conduct if an investigation reveals evidence of discriminatory or abusive behaviour on the part of fans.
To ensure that rules are strong and equitable, Newcastle United will also keep collaborating with officials from fan communities, official supporter groups, and the club’s recently established Fan Advisory Board.
In order to assist the club in eradicating abusive and discriminatory behaviour, both in person and online, kindly keep reporting any incidents you witness or hear as soon as you can.
Supporters are asked to report any events that occur during the game on matchday, if at all feasible. To assist us in identifying individuals who are responsible, supporters can talk to the closest steward or text the word HELP to 60070, followed with the location of their seat and the specifics of the occurrence.
Supporters can contact unitedasone@nufc.co.uk to report issues that occur on days other than matchdays.
Newcastle United will collaborate with the appropriate authorities to identify offenders of any accusations of discriminatory or abusive behaviour, and will take the most severe measures against those implicated.
