Liam Millar’s glowing Preston North End verdict serves as boost amid Sunderland links

Liam Millar’s favorable Preston North End verdict provides a lift amid Sunderland speculation.

This summer, Preston North End fans will be very interested in Liam Millar’s future, but for the time being, he is enjoying life in Deepdale.

Millar, who signed a season-long loan contract with North End on deadline day last summer, has been a big hit. The Canadian international, who left Liverpool for FC Basel in 2021, has four goals and five assists. The 24-year-old has mostly played as a left wing-back, but he has also played as a left flank, right wingback, and right midfielder.

Millar’s impressive performances have sparked attention from Sunderland. Preston want to sign the wide man permanently this summer, but may encounter competition. However, they will not have to sell the club to a player who has thoroughly enjoyed his time there.

“I did have a couple (of other options) in the summer,” Millar told PNE. “But I selected PNE, and Ryan’s idea. I’d spoken with him before, and we had a meeting. I asked him about his ideas, where everything was headed, and how things were going to be. To be honest, it was also near to my father, which was important; off the pitch in Basel was really difficult for me. I wanted to be close to my father again.

Millar expressed his delight at PNE, saying, “Honestly, so much. My family is very near to me, which makes all the difference – simply having those off-the-field activities. I am quite content where I live. There’s a lot of things around that make me joyful. But the guys in the changing room, especially, are all fantastic. I was speaking with Ben Whiteman about it the other day.

“Sometimes you can walk into dressing rooms and chat with some people, but not all of them. As soon as I walked in, I felt as if I could speak to everyone. It wasn’t like there were any large cliques; you’re all close buddies who are all together. None of them make it difficult for me to communicate with. So that was quite pleasant. And it has been quite pleasant to be here with the fellas. And we’re doing great, so I just want to keep it going.”
