Frank Lampard suffered a truly ill-fated stint as manager of Everton, although he was always destined to fail.
That is undoubtedly one of the hardest roles in sports, so anyone who takes it on is putting themselves in danger.
It is surprising that anyone would desire the position given the financial strain of taking on the role of club captain for a team the size of the Toffees and the ongoing on-field difficulties that have continued for the past three seasons.
Sean Dyche is the most recent player to struggle at Goodison Park, most likely due to the same problems that Lampard has recently disclosed.

Now, discussing maybe the most difficult of those three assignments he has completed, he would share what initially astounded him about the Toffees when he joined back in 2022.
“As far as the club itself goes, I was surprised when I got there about where it was at in terms of feeling and when I say that, I think there had been one win in fourteen,” the 45-year-old asserted.
“It was a typical scenario where you might get hired in the middle of the season and realise something is off, but there was also a sense of impending doom and the possibility that this club would be demoted for the first time in a very long time. Although Evertonians are extremely proud that they have avoided relegation, there was a sense that maybe we would now.
It’s quite difficult to overcome since that’s the first thing you need to do right when you have that hanging over you, engulfing the players and fans in a little panic. You must restore the players’ faith in you.
Joining under impossible circumstances
The legendary player from Chelsea is not the first, and he probably won’t be the last, to succumb to Everton’s current problems.
After all, the club’s size and prestige make it an attractive possibility, but they also conceal mountains of debt, little to no transfer money, and a frustrated fan base that is tired of their ongoing issues. It’s a poisoned chalice at the moment.
In particular, Lampard signed after Rafael Benitez’s genuinely poisonous tenure, which severed the supporters’ last connections to the ownership.
It was a grave error that, if Lampard hadn’t been appointed, would have definitely sent them down into the Championship.
