“I want to play,” Celtic’s £3m summer signing star makes game time admission

Despite being on the outside of Brendan Rodgers‘ starting lineup, center defender Gustaf Lagerbielke has acknowledged that he wants to play.

The Swedish international was substituted off the field during the Scottish Cup victory over Livingston over the weekend, when Rodgers’ squad gave up two easy goals to David Martindale’s squad.

Following a recommendation from Carl Starfelt’s agent, who moved to La Liga to join Celta Vigo, Lagerbielke joined with Celtic. With Maik Nawrocki scheduled to join in the summer, the £3 million move was anticipated to be a replacement for his countryman. The Swedish center defender, though, has only made nine appearances and has only scored one goal—the UCL victory over Feyenoord—so the deal has not gone as planned.

In spite of this, the defender is eager to contribute as Celtic attempts to win the Scottish Cup and League in the latter part of the season. Speaking to Aftonbladet, Lagerbielke emphasized that although he will assess his future in the summer, he must continue demonstrating to Rodgers his playing ability.

Thus, my current priorities are to train as hard as I can and keep demonstrating my commitment to playing.

“Since we are still in the cup and competing against Rangers for the league title, we have a chance to win the double.

There are so two championships up for grabs. I’m eager to play and will exert every effort to support the club.

“But, we will assess the situation after the season because I am confident in my ability to play in the top leagues.”

In order to accommodate Maik Nawrocki‘s injury and CCV’s recovery, Rodgers paired Liam Scales with Stephen Welsh in the backfield. Nevertheless, the intensity of Livi’s offensive proved too much for the two players to handle, which will undoubtedly concern Rodgers. After the international break, Rodgers should consider adding Lagerbielke to the squad before Nawrocki and Carter-Vickers return.
