Everton: BBC pundit reacts to appeal news, ‘why should Leeds suffer?’
Following a partial upholding of their appeal against the sentence, the Toffees’ 10-point deduction was reduced to six last month (Sky Sports, 27 February).
Everton and Nottingham Forest were both found to have violated PSR regulations; the results of the second charge are currently pending.
Even taking into consideration Everton’s fragile financial situation, former England and Leeds United goalkeeper Robinson believes that a cash penalty would have been more appropriate in the midst of the season rather than a points deduction.
“Do you charge them extra money now? Or have you lost any points? In my opinion, deducting points in the middle of a season isn’t the best course of action because it simply serves to penalize the players, the management, and the fans.
Why fine a club that’s already got financial problems, one would wonder? You don’t want to see other teams suffer, so why should Leeds suffer if another club is proven guilty, in the eyes of Leeds and the others?
The Everton appeals scandal continues
This season, there has been just as much chatter about Everton off the field as there has been on it, and that has surely been a major distraction.
Although it seems that a standard has been established for breaking PSR regulations, Everton will be hoping to avoid being docked another six points because the second charge relates to a portion of the same time frame as the first.
Although Robinson’s viewpoint is reasonable, it does demonstrate that there isn’t a perfect answer when it comes to PSR accusations.
All that has happened is that the regulations’ implementation has to be changed, and the entire situation has been a chaotic disaster.
