As of right now, it looks like Michael Edwards will not be taking over as Newcastle United’s next sporting director.
Given that Michael Edwards has chosen to go back to Liverpool, there may be more delay in the rumoured transfer of Dan Ashworth to Manchester United.
Following Ashworth’s gardening leave, Edwards and Richard Hughes, who is his route to Liverpool, have been associated with Newcastle United as their new sporting director.Despite Edwards’ immense affection and respect for Newcastle, Chronicle Live has discovered that he had no interest in returning to the role of sporting director.
Edwards has now consented to rejoin the Merseyside team in order to manage the football department at FSG. In 2022, Edwards left Liverpool to pursue other chances. Hughes, a former Bournemouth player, is also expected to be named their next sporting director. For the Magpies, Hughes was seen as a more realistic but still ambitious aim.
Several names have been floated as possible contenders for Ashworth’s St. James’ Park director position. Man United will be required to pay a substantial compensation price of up to £20 million in order to shorten his extended notice term. Because Hughes and Edwards, two potential replacements, have chosen to join Liverpool, the drama may now go on.
Tiago Pinto, the former sporting director of Roma, has also been floated as an Ashworth successor. The Portuguese recently complimented Newcastle, calling them a club with “huge potential.”
