Gary Neville delivered a scoffing instant reaction to news on the changing profit and sustainability rules after cases against Everton, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest.
The Sky Sports pundit responded in real time during the Chelsea vs. Newcastle game at Stamford Bridge on March 11 when analyst Bill Leslie brought up the most recent developments during a discussion on Conor Gallagher’s potential sale.
Earlier in the evening, it was revealed that a system akin to UEFA standards, wherein spending must match a club’s earnings, will replace the current restrictions, which allow clubs to lose a maximum of £105 million over three seasons.
A laughing Neville said (9.11pm): “Now a few of them have been caught? Change the rules!”
Everton, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest investigated under current regulations
Any changes won’t help Everton in that sense, as it has already been announced that none of the current cases will be impacted by the new guidelines.
If the goal is to avoid problems, then Goodison Park is unlikely to be the target of the drive to abandon this system in favour of adopting rules akin to those that govern competition in Europe.
The Toffees have already suffered a points deduction following a contentious argument that has caused a great deal of animosity towards the Premier League; on appeal, the punishment was lessened because of legal errors made by the initial independent committee.
The fact that the rules were decided upon by the clubs themselves is sometimes used as an excuse for Everton to keep silent and take their medicine, but last summer, when only one club was referred—despite the fact that there were multiple charges against City and an ongoing investigation into Chelsea—the premier league teams remained silent.
Therefore, even though there are many arguments that the current rules create more issues than they solve, it hasn’t been beneficial at Goodison Park if Neville’s sentiment—that clubs have decided they are beginning to break the rules and therefore want them changed—is true.
