Rangers: BBC Sport scene pundit fumes over ‘dangerous’ controversy v Hibernian
After Rangers defeated Hibernian 2-0 on Sunday, March 10, to advance to the Scottish Cup semi-final, Stuart Lovell gave his assessment of Nathan Moriah-Welsh’s straight red card.
After Jordan Abita’s second yellow card three minutes earlier, Nick Montgomery’s team was down to nine men after the midfielder’s challenge on John Lundstram.
Even though Lovell contested the ruling, he claimed that the foul satisfied enough requirements for referee Steven McLean to issue a red card.
On Sunday, March 10, the former captain of Livingston said, “I don’t understand,” on BBC Sportscene. I’m not sure what the tackle means. He lunges in there and enters at a certain pace, but he never manages to get the ball.
“He [Montgomery] claims that there was little to no contact with John Lundstram, but that essentially satisfies every condition for a red card for major foul play.” He’s two-footed, lunging, wildly out of control.
You can only inquire as to whether it jeopardizes his opponent’s safety. The only reason it’s a question mark is perhaps that he hasn’t really caught him with his feet. However, it doesn’t have to be all of the above; it can be simply part of the above.
“Many of the people in the stadium gasped, saying things like, ‘Wow, what was he thinking?'” It was a risky challenge, which was worse than being careless.
Rangers advance to Scottish Cup semi-final after Hibernian victory
After replacing Michael Beale as manager at Ibrox in October, Philippe Clement is getting closer to winning a renowned triple.
With just two losses since the Belgian manager took over, the Gers have made an amazing comeback, winning the Viaplay Cup and still standing a chance to win the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, and Europa League.
Clement was lucky not to lose Lundstram following the challenge, especially given the Rangers’ recent luck with injuries. He will, of course, present his case, but after seeing the foul return, Moriah-Welsh ought to be in no doubt.
The referee, quite properly, had no reservations about the challenge. Even while the supporters of Hibernian will make every effort to contest the judgment, it is quite difficult to do so.
Lundstram, who scored the opening goal by converting James Tavernier’s failed penalty in the first half, is an important member of Clement’s team and helped them secure yet another victory.
