The £40million transfer bullet Newcastle United swerved as £140,000-per-week star’s move turns sour

Wantaway Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips was one target for Newcastle United entering the January transfer window, but his move

During the January transfer window, Newcastle United was eager to capture Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City. However, their attempts to do so were swiftly derailed as the European champions sought a £40 million buy requirement.

Instead, after Newcastle pulled out of the race to sign the ex-Leeds star just a couple of days into the window, Phillips made his way to the capital where West Ham were only too happy to sign the player on loan and agree a big money move at the end of the season. But the fitness concerns that Newcastle had over committing to signing the 28-year-old who barely got a game for Man City are starting to come to light for the Hammers.

After failing to leave a lasting impact on West Ham so far, Phillips was substituted off the field during the Hammers’ comfortable 2-2 draw with Burnley at home during halftime of their most recent game. After five Premier League games, Phillips is yet to play 90 minutes for West Ham. To make matters worse, he was given a red card during David Moyes’ team’s loss to Nottingham Forest.

Phillips stated, “I wanted this to be a fresh start, to really get my head down and go for it,” after being fired that day. It hasn’t disappeared as I had planned. That is visible to all. However, I am familiar with football. I have enough experience to know that things will turn around if I grit my teeth, put my head down, and follow the fundamentals. Although it’s simple to say, I now have to carry it out.

However, things haven’t gotten any easier for the Euro 2020 star. Yesterday, when Phillips made his first half appearance and West Ham was losing 2-0 against the relegation-threatened Lancashire team, Moyes was questioned about why he benched Phillips. “You’ve asked me about the score at halftime,” Moyes retorted. I think that tells it all.”
