Sunderland told they lost ‘feel-good factor’ with ‘mistake’ of sacking Tony Mowbray

Ex-Black Cats striker and EFL pundit Don Goodman feels the Wearsiders made a big mistake getting rid of their former manager

Though hindsight is wonderful, former Sunderland striker Don Goodman believes the Black Cats hierarchy should take last year’s mistakes into account and realize that “we made a mistake, we should have stuck with Tony Mowbray.” Goodman, who was once on the Sunderland team, is adamant that Mowbray should not have been fired and that Michael Beale was the wrong choice from the start. “It wouldn’t be fair to say Sunderland has capitulated, but it’s the type of games they have lost in this sequence which is disappointing,” Goodman said of his former side.

“Even if you’re the most stubborn member of Sunderland’s hierarchy, you have to reflect and say, ‘we made a mistake, we should have stuck with Tony Mowbray’. Who knows where they would have been in the summer, there was a feel-good factor around the place.

“That feel-good factor vanishes the moment Tony is fired, and Michael Beale finds himself under pressure because the fans don’t want him.” The fan base is enormous.

There aren’t many experienced players in this group to help them navigate the harsh seas. Hearing your own supporters jeer you off the field and hear them express their disapproval of the new head coach is extremely difficult for a young player to endure. The fact that Sunderland has regressed since Tony Mowbray left should come as no surprise.

“Michael Beale tried to make Sunderland more solid and difficult to play against but took away what we loved about Sunderland, their free-flowing and fearless style of play. Once that was gone, it was only a matter of time until he would lose his job.

“Mike Dodds is in charge and did a decent job before but reality is kicking in. It’s an audition for him which is not going well.”

Goodman informed King Casino Bonus that he felt fired Beale was the only option since “the place was turning toxic.” Imagine if Michael Beale had been in charge of the previous few defeats. Social media and the fan base would go crazy! I can therefore understand why they fired him.

The board of Sunderland has essentially stated, “We have blown our play-off chances because we have messed up so badly.” By placing Mike Dodds in charge, they are trying to stabilize and own their error.

“Despite never thinking I would say that, I believe Sunderland is out of the play-off race and out of the relegation battle.” Tony Mowbray was turned down since they are a young group that might use some experience.
