There was a time in Lewis Ferguson’s career, long before Philippe Clement came over, when Rangers could have signed the midfielder for the long haul.
It turns out that the Scottish midfielder could have taken an entirely different path, as he failed to join for Rangers as a teenager.
This story was relayed by his agent in an interview with CalcioNapoli24 Live today, with Bill McMurdo providing some information about what transpired at Ibrox at the time, stating that it never actually impacted the player.
“Ferguson was rejected by Rangers at the age of 14 and came to me to tell me that it had no effect on him and that he planned to play in Serie A in the future.” Bill Mcmurdo stated that he had an ambition of playing for Italy as early as the age of 14.
Speaking of Ferguson’s future, McMurdo pointed out that he’s wanted by several big clubs, and could be changing clubs in Italy this summer.
“There have been no contacts with Napoli yet, but he is ready to play in the Champions League. He has been linked to Napoli, Milan, Juventus, Inter, Lazio, Atalanta but I have not had direct contact with them. Every big player can be a possibility that we will evaluate in view of next season.”
Ferguson is a product of Hamilton Academical. It was in 2018 that he joined Aberdeen on a €265k deal. In 2022, the Scottish side sold him to Bologna for €2m.
Now given how much the Serie A side is expected to make with his sale, Rangers may regret not having kept hold of him at Ibrox all those years ago.
Transfermarkt value him at €18m, but depending on how the auction goes, he may end up leaving for much more, and none of that money will be ending up in the coffers at Rangers.
