Southampton have had a difficult few weeks in the Championship, but they have finally won consecutive victories to keep automatic promotion alive.

After three defeats in four games, the South Coasters have recovered with victories against Birmingham City and Sunderland.

After leading 2-0, Russell Martin’s team relied on substitute Joe Rothwell to seal a thrilling 4-2 win over the Black Cats.

The Bournemouth loanee scored twice from the bench, moving Southampton five points behind third-placed Ipswich Town and six behind second-placed Leeds United. The Saints have a game in hand over the aforementioned teams.

Following the weekend victory, Martin confessed that three of the substituted players in the second half were upset with his decision.

Despite the three points, Martin revealed that Stuart Armstrong, Will Smallbone, and Jack Stephens were upset with his choice to substitute them in the 71st minute.

“Will (Smallbone) and Stu (Armstrong) are both upset that they are coming off, as they should be. Martin told the Daily Echo that when they win, everyone celebrates together, which is the most essential part.

“We decided at 2-1 to bring on Joe Rothwell for Stuey to add aggression in midfield and drive forward into space.”

“When they scored the second, we considered whether we should take Stu off. He’s one of our most imaginative gamers. However, you must follow your instincts.

“We did that, and it worked out well for us. My opinion was that the game would still be available to us if the participants remained bold.
