Rangers star’s future remains unclear as contrasting new contract claims emerge over pivotal player
The Rangers midfielder is believed to be one of the highest earners at Ibrox.
The future of John Lundstram at Rangers remains uncertain, as negotiations for a new contract have stagnated.
The Rangers Review reported earlier this month that the club plans to secure Lundstram’s services for next season and beyond, with an agreement expected in the coming weeks. However, Football Insider claims this is no longer the case. They say the 30-year-old midfielder ‘wants to examine his alternatives before committing to a new contract’.
Lundstram, who is thought to be one of the highest-paid players at Ibrox, is out of contract in the summer and is expected to receive multiple bids. This season, he has been a frequent starter under Philippe Clement, appearing in 42 games across all competitions and generating some standout performances.
Discussions between the two parties have heated up in recent weeks, with Gers manager Clement personally pushing to get a deal done. According to reports, the Belgian sees Lundstram as an important member of his first-team squad in the future and is ready to sign him to a new contract.
Lundstram, who joined Rangers from Sheffield United in 2021, has played an important role in Clement’s tactical setup, and former Ibrox fan favourite Kris Boyd has stressed the significance of keeping him long-term.
In his weekend column for the Scottish Sun, Boyd expressed his thoughts on Rangers’ future season. Well, keeping John Lundstram beyond the summer will be critical. They need to find a way to bind him down to a new contract.
“He complements (Mohamed) Diomande well and has a huge influence on the way Clement wants the team to play.” To rebuild again next season, the Belgian will need his finest players around him, and Lundstram has been one of the greatest.
