Nottingham Forest told why Premier League made error by not sending off Brighton star

Nottingham Forest had to play against a full Brighton and Hove Albion squad on Sunday afternoon despite Jakub Moder’s poor challenge on Neco Williams

Dermot Gallagher, a former Premier League referee, explained three reasons why Brighton & Hove Albion player Jakub Moder should have been sent off against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Forest fell behind a goal midway through the second half as Moder flew into a challenge on Neco Williams. Referee Michael Salisbury determined that it was only worthy of a yellow card, and VAR chose not to overturn the decision upon review.

On Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, Gallagher was sure that Moder should have received a straight red card. He explained: “I don’t know [why he hasn’t sent him off], to be honest.

“If I was teaching young lads now to be referees I would say: ‘Look, I am going to show you a tackle and this is why I think it is a red card.’ He feels aggrieved there because he gets a flick but that doesn’t negate what he has done.

“If you watch him take off, you’ll see the clue. The speed, intensity, and location of impact are all harmful.

“A red card for me but for whatever reason the referee didn’t think it was a red card, the VAR didn’t think it was a red card but it is definitely a red.”

Gallagher’s analysis explains why Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo was so furious during his post-match press conference. When asked about the decision, he said, “If you want to start the conversation with that, we’ll spend the entire news conference talking about it.

“That’s the question?” It is a red card.

“It’s a severe mistake; we don’t know how the game will conclude, but having an extra man on the field is important in football today. We were on top of the game, dominating and causing issues for Brighton.

“The VAR made a horrible decision. I don’t only evaluate the referee; I saw the image, and it’s an obvious red card.

“Week after week. Week by week. We get them, they apologize to us, but it makes no difference because it costs us money. We are in a difficult position. “We need respect, period.”
