Nottingham Forest notebook: Moder verdict, ‘risky’ transfer, Murillo gains admirer

Latest Nottingham Forest news as Nuno Espirito Santo’s Reds look ahead to crunch clash with Luton Town

Nottingham Forest’s survival fight is entering a critical stage as they approach their last ten games of the season.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side sorely needs to turn around a terrible run of form, having lost four games in a row in all competitions. And their next game, on Saturday, against relegation rivals Luton Town, could not be more important.

This might be a pivotal point in the Reds’ season. Ahead of the game at Kenilworth Road, here’s a round-up of the latest Trentside news.

Moder challenge

Nuno was seething at the decision not to send off Jakub Moder for his challenge on Neco Williams in Sunday’s defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion. That it was far from the first time Forest have been left feeling hard done by after a refereeing call only added to his fury.

He argued the state of Williams’ shin was evidence enough that Moder should have seen red. But the Seagulls man had a different view – even if he admitted he was a little worried when the incident went to a VAR check.

“I watched it back – and my friend sent it to me,” the Albion midfielder told The Argus. “I think the referee knows better than me if it is a yellow or a red. He decided it is a yellow so I believe him and it’s good for me. I watched it back and I can see I touched the ball first, then I hit his ankle.

“It is always a little bit of a worry when you see on the screen that the VAR is checking for a serious foul. I was a little bit worried but luckily it is just a yellow.”

‘Risky’ move

Whatever happens between now and the end of May, it’ll be a busy summer at City Ground. The opening of the transfer window will result in incomings and outgoings.

The Reds have several players who will be out of contract at the end of the season. Among them is defender Loic Mbe Soh, who is set to leave as a free agent. It will bring an end to a four-year run that saw only 13 appearances in the Garibaldi.

Mbe Soh, who is presently on loan at Almere City, admits that his move from PSG in 2020 was always risky. But he believes it was a deliberate one, even if it didn’t turn out quite as he expected

Speaking to PSG’s official website, he said of leaving the French giants: “I played and grew up there for seven years. Obviously, it was like a heartbreak, because Paris gave me everything. Thanks to the club, I had a wonderful experience that can never be taken away from me, but it was time for me to embark on a new adventure.

“I needed to make something of myself, to get out of my comfort zone. So I opted for England, a risky gamble far from home, but a well-considered one.”

Of his time at Almere, he added: “I’ve played around 20 games in all competitions. I’m happy because I came here to get some game time. I’m trying to make my way in the professional world.

“It hasn’t always been easy for me because I’ve had to deal with a few injuries. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger! Paris has given me the mental strength to keep getting back up. I’ve always had big ambitions, and that’s never going to change.”

Morgan’s moment

Morgan Gibbs-White was recently presented with a special award from the Professional Footballers’ Association in recognition of his contribution to England under-21s’ Euros success last year. The PFA also took the opportunity to look back with the 24-year-old on his career so far and pick out some of his picture highlights. They included a snap of Gibbs-White being unveiled as a Forest player and another of him celebrating the winner against Manchester United in December.

“There was a lot of pressure – obviously the price tag, leaving my boyhood club in Wolves to make a big jump to Forest. But it was a move I knew had to happen,” Gibbs-White said of his big money switch to the City Ground in August 2022.

“I felt like it was perfect timing and the right manager at the time. I felt like I just hit the ground running. Fair play to the club and the fans, they welcomed me with open arms.

“I haven’t looked back since.” “I’ve enjoyed every second of wearing the Forest shirt.”

He stated that his goal versus United was “another high point in my career.” As a child, I supported Manchester United. It felt incredible to score the winning goal at the Trent End in front of 30,000 Forest fans. It’s something you’ll keep for the rest of your life.”
