Keith Wyness, a former Everton executive, thinks the Leeds United lawsuit against Everton will be unsuccessful because there is insufficient evidence.
The 66-year-old, who ran a football consultancy advising elite teams after serving as CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009, expressed his concern that the lawsuit may set a negative precedent in an interview with Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.
The Yorkshire team, together with Burnley and Leicester City, notified Everton that they want to file a $300 million lawsuit (£100 million for each club) in the event that the Merseyside team is found guilty of breaking financial regulations.
During their initial hearing, the Toffees were found guilty and given 10 points; however, following a successful appeal last week, their points were lowered to six.
Wyness thinks it will be difficult for the three teams to claim that Everton’s financial rule violations caused them to be relegated.
Wyness told Football Insider, “I’d really ask those three clubs to reconsider because they’ve got to show a direct causation to the damages that Everton have caused them.”
“Is Leeds able to contend that their lacklustre midfield play, back four, or missed opportunities did not contribute to their point losses in specific games?
Therefore, it is exceedingly difficult to demonstrate the exact cause and harm that Everton has caused them.
Therefore, I believe that those cases are quite weak, and continuing down this legal path would set an incorrect precedent for the game.
“Now, rather than worrying about who your center-forward is, we’re worried about getting too much legal interference and worried about who has the best KC.”
