How many points does Sunderland need to stay in the Championship after a disastrous run of six straight losses?

After desperate run of 6-straight defeats how many points do Sunderland need to survive in Championship?

Callum Jacques has the most recent news about Sunderland AFC.

Following their unfortunate loss to Southampton over the weekend, Sunderland has now dropped six straight games and is getting closer to the bottom of the Championship standings.

Based on past performance, though, do the Black Cats currently have enough points? The Echo examines the last ten years more closely to determine the precise number of points that were necessary to survive.

45 points for 2022–2023

Reading was demoted to League One after the previous season with 44 points. Cardiff, with 49 points, maintained their position in 21st place.

38 points for 2021–2022.

Due to Peterborough, Derby, and Barnsley failing to reach 38 points, a meager 38 points would have been sufficient to secure a spot in the Championship in 2022.

44 points for 2020–2021

Derby finished 2021 with 44 points, one more than Wycombe Wanderers, who were demoted and now play in the third division of English football alongside Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday.

49 points for 2019–2020

With 49 points at the end, Barnsley just missed relegation, finishing one point ahead of Charlton, who made it back to League One after defeating Sunderland in the play-offs a year earlier.

41 points for the year 2018–2019

Ipswich Town and Bolton Wanderers both finished with 40 points, while Rotherham finished with 40, meaning that another low total was needed to stay in the Championship in 2019. While Millwall managed to keep afloat with 44 points, 41 would have sufficed.

2017–2018: 42 points

With 37 points at the end of the season, Sunderland was relegated for the second time in two years in 2018. Bolton and Barnsley were demoted as well, and their results weren’t much better—both teams ended with 41 points.

52 points in 2016–2017

Despite having 51 points, Nottingham Forest maintained their lead due to goal differential while Blackburn was demoted to League One by a margin of two goals. With 52 points, Burton finished ahead of Forest—the highest total over the previous ten years.

41 points in 2015–2016

In 2016, Charlton was relegated again after finishing with 40 points, with Bolton and MK Dons moving up to League One to join the Addicks.

42 points in 2014/2015

In 2015, Millwall lost five points to 21st-place Rotherham and were demoted to the third division. Wigan and Blackpool both fell short of the Lions, who concluded with 41 points.

2013–2014: 45 points

Another instance of a side being demoted based solely on goal differential occurred in 2014 when Birmingham City’s greater goal differential after both teams finished with 44 points sent Doncaster Rovers to League One.

Verdict

A squad needs 44 points on average to stay up over the last ten years. In eight of the last ten seasons, Sunderland’s current point total of 47 would have been sufficient to keep them in the Championship.

In the history of the Championship, a team has only lost with 50 or more points three times. Gillingham with 50 points in 2005 on goal difference, Peterborough with 54 points in 2013, and Blackburn with 52 points in 2017 on goal difference.
