‘Fantastic club’ – £7m Champions League goalscorer drops summer transfer hint after Newcastle United agreement
Over the weekend, Feyenoord’s Yankuba Minteh, on loan from Newcastle United, scored his fourth goal in three games.
With a goal in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Heracles in the Dutch Eredivisie, Yankuba Minteh extended his goal-scoring run for Feyenoord.
After a deft dummy from Lutsharel Geertruida, the Newcastle United loanee opened the scoring with a first-time finish to score his eighth goal of the season in only 14 starts. The 19-year-old winger’s goal was his fourth in his previous three games after he scored twice in a 2-0 victory over Almere City the week before and in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with PSV Eindhoven.
In addition to his December Champions League group stage loss to Celtic, he has scored seven goals in the league.Minteh spent almost £7 million to join Newcastle from Odense in the summer before being loaned to Feyenoord for the 2023–24 campaign. In light of an injury crisis, there was discussion of Newcastle bringing Methem back to the team during the January transfer window. But the club didn’t try to shorten his loan term because there was no recall clause. Minteh is scheduled to play the entire season at Feyenoord and return to Tyneside for more evaluation at the conclusion of the campaign. The choice of whether to keep him as part of Eddie or loan him out again will then be decided.
However, Feyenoord technical director Dennis te Kloese has stated that the team will start negotiations to see if they can sign Minteh to a longer loan.
“In April, Newcastle United will talk about this,” he said to AD in the Netherlands. “He is improving. Even though he is still very young, his speed is amazing.”
At Feyenoord, Minteh is also open to playing another season. Following his weekend goal, he declared: “I stay here if given the opportunity.” Feyenoord is an amazing soccer team.
Feyenoord won the Dutch league last season but currently sit second in the table, 10 points behind leaders PSV with nine games remaining. The Rotterdam side have been knocked out of the Champions League and Europa League but have reached the final of the KNVB Cup where they will face NEC Nijmegen at De Kuip on April 21.
