Disappointed to depart Championship club following head coach dismissal, the former Southampton and Middlesbrough player

Dean Whitehead, a former midfielder for Sunderland, responded to his departure from Championship team Watford.

Following Watford’s split from head coach Valerien Ismael, former Sunderland midfielder Dean Whitehead has confirmed his departure.

After coaching stints at Huddersfield and Cardiff, Whitehead joined the Hornets in June of last year as an assistant head coach. Whitehead had previously worked with Ismael at Turkish club Besiktas.

However, after losing 2-1 to Coventry on Saturday, Watford confirmed that Ismael was leaving the team, ending a run of just one victory in ten games. Tom Cleverley, a former midfield player, will take over as the team’s acting head coach in place of Whitehead and fellow assistant coach Omar Riza.

In response to the announcement, Whitehead tweeted: “It was sad to leave, but I really enjoyed my time here at Watford FC. Thank you @WatfordFC.” To all of you at the club, good luck.”

Whitehead played for Sunderland for 199 games from 2004 to 2009 before moving to Stoke City. Later in his career, he played for Huddersfield and Middlesbrough as well.
