Wright and Lineker agree on ‘fortunate’ claim after Everton loss to Manchester Utd

Everton fell to yet another defeat yesterday afternoon, as they lost 2-0 to Manchester United despite their dominance.

This season, Evertonians have far too frequently had to put up with performances like this one. They seized the chance to leave their imprint on the game, but they lacked the skill and self-assurance to truly defeat the Red Devils.

This outcome continues their appalling track record at Old Trafford, where they have only triumphed once in thirty-two years, and it also signifies another Premier League match without a victory.

Mid-December, or about three months ago, was when they last spoke.

Two pundits agreed on one thing that Everton had going for them despite this losing streak.

What Ian Wright and Gary Lineker said about Everton

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day last night, Ian Wright and Gary Lineker agreed on a point Sean Dyche had made earlier in the programme.

Yesterday afternoon, Everton was in the same old situation as usual, creating opportunity after opportunity but to no avail.

These commentators would criticise the hosts while simultaneously applauding their efforts on the road in spite of yet another disappointing outcome.

“For Everton, it’s kind of an all too familiar tale really, so profligate in front of goal,” Lineker initially observed.

Wright would concur: “Yeah, they’re doing everything right, as the manager mentioned there, but it’s the poise and some of the choices they’re making there at the end.” They had a great start to the game.

“They’re really unlucky, but Man United’s penalty take was really well-executed.” They were really lucky, in my opinion, since Everton had a really clever game plan.

Same old story for Everton

Manchester United v Everton FC - Premier League

For Everton, it seems like they are playing in a groundhog day every weekend right now. They have dominated, had numerous excellent opportunities to score, missed them all, and suffered greatly as a result.

They did unmatched work in between the two boxes, and once more, there was only one team trying to control the outcome of the game.

Even if they are now in control, Dyche’s players only appear to falter at that point because of the mounting pressure of expectations that only intensifies as they keep missing opportunities.

Ultimately, the Toffees bombarded Old Trafford with 23 efforts, six of which threatened Andre Onana’s goal.

The shocking statistic is further compounded by the obvious wastefulness of it. It follows that Wright and Lineker’s conclusions are not surprising when looking at that figure.

But Everton can’t keep complaining about their lack of luck. Time is running out for them to save themselves, so they must change the course of events.
