Sunderland suffered a sixth-straight defeat in the Championship vs Southampton on Saturday.

Six straight games lost for Sunderland is a first since 2006.

On Saturday, Southampton defeated Sunderland once more, winning twice before halftime before Romaine Mundle and Jobe Bellingham’s goals pulled the Black Cats even.

However, after levelling the score, Southampton showed their class when Joe Rothwell scored twice in a short period of time to give Southampton a 4-2 victory.

The Black Cats’ loss on Saturday maintains them in 11th position in the standings, with nine points separating them from the bottom three.

Another painful episode in Sunderland’s season

Any chance of a play-off finish is all but gone as the Black Cats’ lead over the other six teams is currently 11 points.

Furthermore, any chance of making the playoffs the following season appears to be fading after showings like the one against Southampton.

This Sunderland team still has a lot of work ahead of it, and the club must name a new manager in the summer.

The first hour of yesterday’s match highlighted Sunderland’s current state of disarray, with attention beginning to turn on owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and sporting director Kristjaan Speakman.

If one were to go back three or four years, Sunderland would be in a far better position.

Sunderland wasn’t even a League One team two years ago, so it doesn’t seem all that bad that their play-off aspirations have been destroyed by a run of six straight losses.

However, considering the club’s history and the amount of money spent in the most recent transfer windows, expectations are still high.

Spending is spending, even though it hasn’t been a significant amount. However, the problem appears to be in the way the funds have been allocated.

Sunderland is a rather mediocre club without Jack Clarke in the lineup at the moment. They simply lack a striker.

That is the source of the frustration, then. It’s also annoying that Sunderland has had two transfer windows to address its striker shortage, but they haven’t been able to do so in either.

Hence, a busy summer is ahead of us, requiring the hiring of new players and a manager as well as perhaps a reconsideration of the club’s strategy for advancing to the Premier League after this season’s clear setback.

Sunderland will play QPR at the Stadium of Light the following Sunday.
