Roy Keane and Ole Gunnar Solskjær respond to links to vacant Sunderland job

The pair have been linked with a return to the Stadium of Light

Former Sunderland manager Roy Keane has been linked with a return to the role as the club search for a permanent option to appoint in the summer.

Following the dismissal of former manager Michael Beale after just two months in charge, Mike Dodds was named temporary manager until the end of the season. Between Beale’s entrance and Tony Mowbray’s dismissal, Dodds had held this role. In that brief period, he won both of the games he managed, but this second term hasn’t seen him reach the same level of success. Since the resignation of the former Queens Park Rangers manager, they have suffered three consecutive losses.

Several names have been brought up in the conversation, including Will Still, the manager of Stade de Reims who, according to the Sunderland Echo, caught the interest of the Black Cats after they traded Mowbray. However, a local journalist also brought up the former captain of Manchester United, and Keane addressed the suggestion.

Nick Barnes of BBC Radio Newcastle stated on Total Sport that Keane is promoting himself to teams looking for a manager, and that another former Black Cats manager is also being considered.

“There are a few names in the hat. Alex Neil, we are aware of. Right now, he’s on a whole Sunshine charm assault.

Roy Keane has been saying a lot that he would be glad to come back, but I don’t think that will happen under this ownership structure. I could see him coming if the ownership was proper, but I don’t think he would come with the current ownership.

Barnes went on, “I’m told that Scott Parker and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have both thrown their hats in the ring. We’ll have to wait and see, but there are a lot of names in the picture. They most likely will still be considering a coach of Will Still’s calibre if they still desired him in December or January. Many things, in my opinion, depend on Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’s performance during the summer and if he remains in this country.

“Obviously, it looks like he is going to be but who knows in football and whether there would be more money available to the head coach and whether they are going to be a bit more elastic on the model in terms of signing experienced players.”

With a witty Instagram post, the former Irish international and Solskjær refuted the accusations.

He has expressed a desire to return to football management in the past. That was the last role he played for Ipswich Town in 2011.

In August 2006, the Sky Sports analyst became Sunderland’s manager. He earned Championship Manager of the Year in his first season in charge, his first managerial position, and he got the team promoted back to the Premier League.

He then acknowledged that he was fortunate to have been hired in the first place.

Keane ultimately quit halfway through his second season in charge of the Mackems. In his century of games, he finished with 42 victories, and his 100th game as the Black Cats’ manager was also his 100th game overall.

Appointing Roy Keane would be a horrible move by the Sunderland board

The club’s future plans focus on the notion that they will sign young, gifted players who can advance them up the ranks and be sold for enormous sums of money. Making Keane, or someone similar, their next manager would completely contradict that philosophy and goal, and supporters would begin to seriously doubt the actions of Louis-Dreyfus and Kristjaan Speakman.

Gareth Ainsworth was a mistake made by Queens Park Rangers. When he first joined, the majority of the players had quite different skill levels than him when it came to football. Sure, it kept them going in the near term, but the players he had available didn’t quite fit their goals when things started to go wrong this season and Marti Cifuentes was brought in.

They’re back on track again, but if Ainsworth hadn’t been brought in, they may have arrived sooner. Keane taking over as Sunderland’s next permanent manager could have equally negative effects.
