Notre Dame has perhaps the best coordinator duo in college football.
What a difference a year makes for Notre Dame, who now boast one of college football’s best coordinator duos. Having two good coordinators has been an uncommon occurrence at Notre Dame, but head coach Marcus Freeman has established that as he enters his third season with the Irish. There have been times in the previous 15 years when the Irish had excellent coordinators on both sides of the ball. Chuck Martin (offense) and Bob Diaco (defensive) were successful in 2012 and 2023, while Chip Long (offense) developed a strong tandem with Mike Elko (defense, 2017) and Clark Lea (defense, 2018-20). Freeman had an unpleasant hunt for a coordinator last summer, and his top two candidates did not wind up at Notre Dame. The Andy Ludwig discussions were a disaster for the program, and it was the reason why the eventual hiring, Gerad Parker, was never going to receive a fair shake. Parker was always going to appear like the settle hiring, and the 2023 season was his first complete season in control of an offense.
Parker accomplished some wonderful things, but the offense wasn’t quite good enough in the key games to help the Irish finish better than 9-3 in the regular season. After Parker left to become Troy’s head coach, Freeman went all in and hired Mike Denbrock, a former coordinator at LSU (2022-23), Cincinnati (2017-21), and Notre Dame (2014-16). It was a perfect fit for Freeman, who worked as an amazing coordinator tandem with Denbrock in Cincinnati from 2017 to 2020. Freeman has only hired one defensive coordinator, Al Golden. His first season was solid, with Golden’s defense winning most weeks, but the team did not finish strong enough to be considered a top bunch. That changed in 2023, when Golden built one of the country’s strongest defenses. This resulted in a well-deserved salary increase this summer, and Golden will return for a third season.

Notre Dame went from having frequent concerns about one of the two coordinators (and occasionally both) to Freeman assembling perhaps the finest coordinator combination in collegiate football. If you, like me, feel the Irish have a talent level that should have eclipsed their win-loss record over the previous two seasons, this shift might be transformative for the team. With coaches on both sides of the ball with a track record of building big-time units, the Irish have the opportunity to maximize their personnel on both sides of the ball. Look at the numbers. Denbrock’s LSU offense topped the country in scoring offense, overall offense, yards per play, yards per pass attempt, passer rating, fewest tackles for loss allowed, and plays of at least 20 yards, 30 yards, and 40 yards. The Tigers also placed second in third-down offense and third in passing yards per game. The Fremeau Efficiency Index placed his offensive second in the country, but the ESPN Football Power Index put it first. Golden’s defense topped the country in pass efficiency defense, rated seventh in scoring defense, and was in the top five in overall defense, yards allowed per play, passing yards allowed, pass yards allowed per attempt, pass yards allowed per completion, red zone defense, and red zone touchdown defense. The FEI ranked the Irish defense sixth, while ESPN FPI placed it tenth. Notre Dame is one of just two teams to retain a coordinator who finished in the Top 10 in both the FEI and the FPI last season. The other is USC, who hired UCLA defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn last summer. Notre Dame is one of just three teams with coordinators on both sides of the ball and a unit that finished in the top ten nationally in scoring last season. The other two were Georgia and Oregon. Notre Dame was going to be that regardless of Parker’s return, but Notre Dame was seventh in scoring offense under Parker, while Denbrock’s defense rated first. The difference between Notre Dame and USC is that Lynn has only been the coordinator for one season. His first job was fantastic, but he takes over a defense that finished 121st in scoring defense, 119th in overall defense, and 104th in yards allowed per play. Denbrock takes over an offense that ranks seventh in scoring offense, ninth in yards per play, and 29th in overall offense. Ohio State is another club that may make a case for having the finest coordinator combination, owing to Jim Knowles’ return to defense and Chip Kelly’s decision to leave his position as UCLA’s head coach to become the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator. If you’re wondering why the Irish are being pushed up the preseason rankings, even into the Top 5 by some sites, this is a significant reason. This offseason, Freeman has made some daring coaching and personnel decisions. He got several notable portal selections, including Duke quarterback Riley Leonard, but Denbrock’s hire has sparked the greatest interest, and for good reason. If Notre Dame wants to ultimately knock down the door and become a championship program, it must excel on both sides of the ball. There have been years where the defense was arguably that outstanding, and one might argue that the last time the Irish had an offensive like that was in 2015, with Denbrock leading the way. Having Golden and Denbrock together provides Notre Dame with its finest shot in decades to deploy an offense and defense capable of winning championships.
