Mark Wilson assesses Celtic squad depth solution after surprising Brendan Rodgers decision
The Parkhead supporters were taken aback by Alexandro Bernabei’s departure from Celtic this week. It was the timing of it, not that they didn’t want to lose the guy.
Because Greg Taylor is the only identifiable fullback at the team, Brendan Rodgers will be lacking at that position for the whole of the season due to Bernabei’s departure.
Mark Wilson, a former Hoops defender, thinks Rodgers has already selected a backup player and that the Celtics manager would not have let him leave if he hadn’t had a plan in place.
“Well, I’ve got to think that Brendan Rogers has assessed all his options before he allowed Brendabei to exit the building,” Wilson stated [Superscoreboard].
Since he is a left back by trade, people sometimes anticipate you to throw him on when there is an issue, which might exacerbate the situation when you have a player like that who isn’t helping.
“But he’s allowed to cut the cloth; he hasn’t adversely or positively contributed. However, I believe he has seen enough of Anthony Ralston, who is dependable at left back even though he will never provide you with that balance.
He clearly considered it, concluded that we would be better off without Bernabei, and decided that in the event that Taylor became problematic, he would turn to Ralston.
As a left-back backup, Anthony Ralston has already shown he is more than capable.Earlier in the season, Brendan Rodgers chose him to play there ahead of a fully healthy Bernabei, demonstrating his faith in him.
To be honest, Celtic has managed to get by without the Argentinian defender for the majority of the last two seasons. We should be fine for the last nine games of this season, in my opinion.
And considering what Bernabei had to deliver when given the chance at Celtic this season, we would be better off taking a chance on Ralston, who has never failed us.
