Both parties found the Jimmy Garoppolo period in Las Vegas to be embarrassing. Last offseason, Garoppolo inked a three-year deal worth up to $72.75 million, but buyer’s regret crept in fast. In only six games as the starting quarterback for the Raiders, Garoppolo threw nine interceptions. Among the highest percentages in the league, more than 5% of his pass attempts were intercepted. Tyson Bagent and Bailey Zappe had interceptions at around the same rate as Nick Mullens, who was the only other player who did so. Garoppolo’s final game as a Las Vegas starter would be a Monday Night Football disaster in Detroit. He’s an obvious choice for this offseason.
How the Raiders Can Resolve Their QB Issue

Aidan O’Connell, a fourth-round pick out of Purdue University, was promoted to the major leagues halfway through the season. The youngster, who seemed calm and collected beyond his years, provided much-needed vitality to Sin City. Under O’Connell and interim head coach Antonio Pierce, the Raiders united to enjoy a good season finale.
The main problem is that O’Connell was merely mediocre rather than outstanding. With the exception of throwing fewer interceptions, he did not perform statistically better than Garoppolo. O’Connell’s yards per attempt, completion percentage, and touchdown rate were all noticeably lower than those of his predecessor.
This offseason, Las Vegas made a few organisational adjustments that don’t seem good for O’Connell. Recently, O’Connell’s hand-picked offensive coordinator and general manager were fired. When a new regime assumes power, the roster they inherit usually loses some of its loyalty. Expect a quarterback change this offseason because of O’Connell’s draft capital, subpar performance, and actions off the field.
Options Before Draft
The Raiders have a few options if they decide to sign a quarterback before the draft. Justin Fields, who is purportedly on Chicago’s trade block, is the first choice. The fact that Las Vegas hired Fields’ former offensive coordinator, Luke Getsy, makes him an attractive candidate. They had some bad experiences in Chicago, but it’s difficult to assign blame. Getsy and Fields might be getting back together out west if they got along well in their last term.
Next week, a number of well-known players become free agents; the Raiders may show interest in acquiring some of them. Russell Wilson is the most likely well-known prospect to end up in Las Vegas. The Raiders were formerly their division foe, and during Wilson’s time in Denver, they had the opportunity to observe him up close. Although there are better players available in the free agency pool, none are anticipated to sign with Las Vegas.
Rather, backup plans would be quarterbacks who have previously been backup plans. Mason Rudolph, Ryan Tannehill, and Gardner Minshew are a few of their choices. Although they have had some encouraging moments, these quarterbacks are not very good. It would probably be better for the Raiders to focus on O’Connell’s growth.
Initial Prospects
With any luck, Las Vegas will select a top talent in this year’s draft. They have the 13th overall pick, so trading up makes sense if they’re serious about getting a franchise quarterback. Even if they move up, it’s reasonable to believe that a few of the best prospects are unattainable. However, one of J.J. McCarthy, Drake Maye, or Jayden Daniels might be within the Raiders’ reach.
