Sunderland manager Mike Dodds believes that at times during Saturday’s match at St Mary’s, his Black Cats team outperformed Southampton.
In the Championship match, Southampton had a 2-0 lead, but Sunderland rallied to tie the score in the 71st minute.
The team led by Russell Martin then scored two more goals to win 4-2 and earn all three points.
The outcome compounded Sunderland’s bad run, as they have now dropped their past six games and are rapidly losing ground on teams chasing a postseason berth.
However, Dodds sees at least one bright spot: he believes that Sunderland was occasionally superior to Southampton.
After the game, Dodds said to the reporters, “I’m not going to say we deserved to win because you don’t when you concede four goals, but there were periods of the game where we were better than Southampton.”
The next game Sunderland plays is at home against QPR, as Dodds tries to halt the damage.
Michael Beale was fired by the Black Cats recently, and Dodds was given the position for the end of the season.
