Everton’s PSR stance criticised amid Newcastle United and Aston Villa developments

The Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules continue to dominate headlines amid reports that some clubs will have to sell key players in order to comply.

Aston Villa and Newcastle United may have to sell some of its best players this summer in order to comply with the Premier League’s current Profit and Sustainability Rules, according to sources. Jamie Carragher thinks that these rules should be changed. When the Magpies released their financial statements in January, they too declared a loss. Earlier this week, Villa announced a £119.6 million loss. Both teams insist they are on track to pass the present regulations, but in order to pay for next moves, they could have to sell one or two of their star players.

Earlier in the season, the Premier League started to enforce these rules, docking Everton ten points, which was later lowered to six on appeal. While Nottingham Forest is anticipated to get a point reduction as well, the Toffees could face yet another potential deduction.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Carragher expressed his opinion that the current regulations should be changed to prevent clubs from being barred from moving forward when they have the financial resources to do so. He also believes that clubs’ self-interest is a major factor in why Everton and other teams are currently in this situation. “They (Everton) have an owner who spends money; they had one once. You have overspent beyond belief.

“Everton has incurred enormous costs. Hold on, this is the same Everton that was a member of the “Big Six,” or five, that voted in Sky Sports, the Premier League, and other things when the league first began.

“When these regulations were introduced ten years ago, Bill Kenwright supported them because they benefited Everton, which was a financially strapped team. My point is that, regardless of the circumstance, people always modify their arguments. You complain about it, yet you didn’t mind falling behind everyone when you were among the top five.

“I’ve stated that I dislike the rules because, at a certain point, you can’t go forward and must sell a player. Villa or Newcastle are mentioned as examples of teams that must sell a player in order to advance, and you don’t want that.”
