The EFL pundit has been discussing the Black Cats’ fortunes so far this season.
Don Goodman has sent a clear message to Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Kristjaan Speakman.
When talking about how Sunderland’s season has collapsed, the former player turned NFL analyst placed the blame on the club’s management, saying they had to admit they made a mistake about Tony Mowbray.

Goodman implied that they ought to have supported the former Black Cats more in terms of adding a few more seasoned players to the team in addition to meaning this in terms of firing Mowbray.

“It wouldn’t be accurate to state that Sunderland has given up, but what is sad is the kind of games they have lost in this run. They suffered defeats to Swansea, Huddersfield, and Birmingham while outside the play-off spots.
“We made a mistake, we should have stuck with Tony Mowbray,” you have to admit, even if you’re the most obstinate person in Sunderland’s hierarchy. There was something uplifting about the setting, so who knows where they would have been in the summer.”
Goodman: Feel-good factor left Sunderland following Mowbray dismissal
Following Mowbray’s departure, Sunderland looked to former Rangers manager Michael Beale to lead the squad, but Beale was fired after just 12 games in command.
Goodman, however, claims that he was not surprised to see the team regress after Mowbray’s dismissal because the positive vibe at the team vanished when he was stripped of his responsibilities.
“That feel-good factor vanishes the moment Tony is fired, and Michael Beale finds himself under pressure because the fans don’t want him.” The fan base is enormous, Goodman continued.
There aren’t many experienced players in this group to help them navigate the harsh seas. Hearing your own supporters jeer you off the pitch and hear them express their disapproval of the new head coach is extremely difficult for a young player to endure. The fact that Sunderland has regressed since Tony Mowbray left should come as no surprise.
“We loved Sunderland’s free-flowing, fearless style of play, and Michael Beale tried to take that away from us by making Sunderland more resilient and challenging to play against.” It was only a matter of time till he lost his job after it was gone.

Recent Sunderland form
As Goodman suggests, the team’s on-field performance has not improved under Mike Dodds, who is currently the club’s temporary manager.
Dodds has overseen three Championship matches since Michael Beale was fired, all of which resulted in defeat.
The team now has a steep hill to climb in order to qualify for this season’s Championship play-offs.
The club’s current priorities should be wrapping up as well as possible under Dodds and concentrating on selecting their next permanent manager in the summer.
Kristjaan Speakman and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus need to make that appointment correctly.
