UTTON SLAMS ‘BIZARRE’ CELTIC TRANSFER CALL AND CANNOT BELIEVE £2M DECISION.
Celtic great Chris Sutton has been perplexed by the ‘bizarre’ sale of David Turnbull, as well as Alexandro Bernabei’s abrupt exit from the Scottish Premiership winners.
Celtic’s board has faced criticism for the players they have brought in, with many of Brendan Rodgers’ signings falling short of expectations. However, there are also concerns about individuals the club has allowed go.
Celtic sold David Turnbull, who had previously relegated Reo Hatate to the bench, for £2 million.Turnbull, who scored seven goals in nine league starts before joining Cardiff City in January, left Rodgers to rely on 18-year-old Daniel Kelly during the recent 2-0 loss to Hearts.
The departure of Alexandro Bernabei has also perplexed Sutton. The Argentine’s struggles at both ends of the pitch were due to a lack of left-back backup in the Celtic squad, not his performance under Rodgers.
Celtic move out three first-team players
“Why has Celtic allowed Alexandro Bernabei to leave? “It just doesn’t make sense to me,” Sutton asked the Daily Record.
“Listen, the Argentine is no world-beater. But he is a left back. And while it may have gone overlooked at Celtic Park, it is a troublesome position for them. They currently just have Greg Taylor. While he has been a steady performer, he has also suffered from injuries.
“Celtic is currently in a title run with no cover. It’s craziness.”
There is no denying that Celtic’s roster appears weaker now than it did at the start of 2024, with Liel Abada’s departure to Charlotte FC in the MLS also depriving Rodgers of a consistent goalscoring threat from out wide.Nicolas Kuhn, recruited in from Rapid Vienna, has struggled to replicate Abada’s influence in Glasgow.
“I understand why Liel Abada left. It’s an awful and deeply disappointing turn of circumstances that has cost Celtic one of their most productive players. However, allowing Bernabei to leave after the catastrophic failure of bringing in a replacement in January makes no sense,” Sutton says.
“What struck me was the absence of David Turnbull (at Hearts). Again, I’m not claiming he’s world-class. However, when looking for a goal, he might have an impact on the game. However, no successor has been signed since January.
“It’s just bizarre.”
Adam Idah a rare success story
Adam Idah, on loan from Norwich City, has made an early impression.Idah tallied five goals in his first five Scottish Premiership matches. Including a couple of stoppage time goals, Celtic remained within touching distance of Old Firm rivals Rangers at the top of the table.
Celtic face Livingston in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals at Parkhead on Sunday.
Meanwhile, HITC Football understands that Bernabei’s move to Internacional was undertaken to free up cash for the signing of Coaimhin Kelleher. Celtic have chosen Liverpool’s goalkeeper over Ugurcan Cakir to replace Joe Hart, who is retiring.
