It has been announced that Sunderland skipper Corry Evans has experienced yet another injury setback.

The 33-year-old Sunderland player Evans has missed more than a year of action due to a cruciate ligament injury he sustained at the beginning of 2023.

The Northern Irishman, who is expected to appear in several U21s games, was recently spotted working out with the first squad as he continues his recuperation.

However, Mike Dodds has since disclosed that Evans has encountered a small obstacle in his recuperation.

According to Mike Dodds, Corry Evans “rolls” his ankle, but “nothing major.”

Before Saturday’s Championship match against Southampton, interim manager Dodds disclosed Evans’ most recent injury to We Are Sunderland. He said:

“It’s nothing serious; Corry rolled his ankle this morning. There was a debate over whether or not he should play, but they decided to give him a few days.

“Corry won’t be playing on Monday, but given his extended absence, it’s more of a precaution than anything else.”

Evans should be back for Sunderland U21s’ match against Newcastle United later this month.

Evans, a former Manchester United youth product, has made 408 games in his career thus far, split between stints at Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers, and Hull City, 64 of which have been in red and white.

After reconnecting with former Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray at the Stadium of Light, Evans played a pivotal role in the 2021/22 promotion-winning season in League One, appearing 36 times in the league and scoring two goals and assisting two more.

Evans’s lengthy recuperation journey at Sunderland

For Evans, it has undoubtedly been a difficult procedure.

Evans had already sustained a serious injury, and although this most recent setback appears to be relatively minor, it does reinforce the likelihood that we won’t see Evans wearing a Sunderland shirt in the future.

With only a few months left in the season, Evans’ contract expires at the end of the game, therefore he is in a hurry to finish.

But Evans might still be preparing for a return to first-team action in April if he can play for the U21s at the end of the month and over the two-week international break.

And it would be fantastic to see Evans back in action; Sunderland has definitely missed having someone with his steel and expertise in the middle of the field this season. Evans could put himself in the sale window ahead of the summer if he could make some spectacular cameos for Sunderland.

On Saturday, Southampton vs. Sunderland will begin at 3 p.m.
