Nottingham Forest offered ‘last resort’ stadium move to scrapped HS2 site

Some council members are proposing that the club relocate to a location close to Toton Railway Station.

Nottingham Forest has been “offered a last resort” new home at a location that was previously designated for HS2-related construction. In recent months, negotiations to extend the club’s lease at the City Ground have come to a standstill.

The land’s owner, Nottingham City Council, claims to have discussed the Premier League team’s future at the stadium, where the Reds have played since 1898, in negotiations. Now, some Nottinghamshire County council members are proposing that the club relocate to property next to Toton Railway Station, which the authorities purchased in order to profit from HS2’s advantages.

Nevertheless, Independent Alliance council members claim that this might be Forest’s house’s “last resort” following the postponement of the multibillion-pound project’s Eastern leg. A proposal to “explore options with stakeholders at Nottingham Forest Football Club and others to try to secure the future of the club” is being proposed by the opposition group for an upcoming meeting. This could involve looking into if there are any County Council properties that would be acceptable and advertised for disposal in the future.

Independent Selston councillor David Martin said: “We have watched with increasing frustration at the breakdown of talks over a new lease between Nottingham City Council and Nottingham Forest. This has led to uncertainty for the future of Nottingham Forest remaining at the world-famous City Ground that it has called home since 1898.

“As a county council, we obviously need to engage with the club, which is a major economic force in our area. Toton already possesses the necessary infrastructure, such as a train station and a tram stop.”Any new stadium in Toton will hold significantly more people than the City Ground does now. The club’s expansion would only be supported if Nottinghamshire County Council truly wanted to assist it, in which case investigating options now would only be a last choice.
