James Tarkowski dreadful as Dwight McNeil shines – Everton player ratings v Manchester United

Everton player ratings v Manchester United: James Tarkowski terrible, Dwight McNeil impresses.

Everton lost an immensely difficult encounter at Old Trafford, with defensive blunders squandering a strong performance and handing Manchester United a facile 2-0 victory.

The Toffees started brightly and put the hosts on the back foot, but that was undone in the 10th minute when James Tarkowski swung a leg to bring down Alejandro Garnacho in the box, and Bruno Fernandes scored the resulting penalty, before Ben Godfrey fouled the same man 25 minutes later, and Marcus Rashford doubled the lead.

The second half was mostly boring, with the damage done before the break and the hosts’ only serious danger down the right with Garnacho, so the Toffees head into three weeks off having squandered a golden opportunity.

Goodison News scores Everton players out of 10 based on their performance at Old Trafford.

Jordan Pickford – 7.

Despite giving up two penalty kicks, they performed admirably. Despite guessing correctly, the penalty was sent into the corner beyond his reach. However, he made a great stop to prevent Fernandes from scoring midway through the first half.Rashford’s attempt was unsuccessful. Also saved one from a goalmouth scramble after the interval.

Ben Godfrey – 3

Poor. Despite being selected over Nathan Patterson and Seamus Coleman on the right, he made a mistake by diving in to bring down Garnacho, resulting in a second penalty.Dobbin failed to convert a good knock down late in the game, resulting in a wasteful forward effort.

Jarrad Branthwaite – 7

The lone man holding things together on the back line as the defense undermined so much excellent work elsewhere. Dyche has stated that he would not allow the defender go, as seen by his brilliant last-ditch attempt to prevent Kobbie Mainoo from tapping in before a late flag, as well as another significant challenge on Garnacho.Even he had to be rescued from surrendering another penalty at the end by the offside flag.

James Tarkowski – 2

He was terrible in the first half, committing many fouls and undermining Everton’s excellent start by giving away a penalty with a careless trailing leg. Often very crucial, but I had a really awful day at work today.Less disastrous after the break, but he looked ponderous and cumbersome in possibly his worst Everton performance.

Ben Godfrey Everton

Vitalii Mykolenko (off for Chermiti ’88) – 4

He started well but then lost his path. The Toffees’ best threat came from the left, where they teamed nicely with McNeil. However, frequent defensive blunders made it simple for Garnacho to get in behind them. VAR waived out his handball as a supporting arm, preventing him from awarding an extraordinary third penalty. Some may argue that he needed to be high up the pitch to help with a comeback, but the home team had plenty of opportunity to attack down his flank in the second half.

Ben Godfrey and James Tarkowski nullified Everton’s solid work in the first half.

James Garner (off for Young ’75) – 6

In a promising start, he posed a threat against his previous team, but faded as the game was lost farther back. Garnacho waltzed into the box, where Godfrey felled him due to a weak challenge.Following a promising start, it faded significantly.

Amadou Onana – 7

The game for the £80 million-rated celebrity has both positive and negative aspects. Involved regularly from the start and was typically effective on the ball in midfield but struggled in front of goal. In the first half of the game, he missed a crucial opportunity inside the six yard box. He was then booked for giving away a dangerous free kick outside his own box, almost leading to a second goal. As a result, he was unable to challenge Garnacho before conceding the second penalty. One amazing bicycle kick came close.

Dwight McNeil – 8 (Man of the Match)

Very amazing. Easily the best player on the Everton team with a promising start to the season. In the second minute, they won a corner and found Onana with a fantastic cross that should have been converted. They also came near with a volley and an arrowed low attempt around the half hour mark.He gave his best but received nothing.

Jack Harrison (off for Dobbin, 1961) – 7

Busy performance, looked well on the ball, but lacked the necessary impact and faded as the game progressed. Excellent tracking back early on to thwart Marcus Rashford on the break, seconds after delivering a fantastic cross into the United area for Branthwaite.I got near with an early picture, but not close enough.

Everton

Dwight McNeil’s superb performance at Old Trafford went to nothing.

Abdoulaye Doucouré (off for Gomes ’61) – 5

He fell well short of his full potential. Despite Everton having lots of possession, he struggled to get involved, with his only contribution to the opening 45 minutes being a card for dissent after the second penalty was conceded.A handful of promising chances were turned down early in the second period.

Beto (off for Calvert-Lewin ’61) – 5

Not exactly overburdened with service, but did not have a single shot when the Toffees were leading in the first half.held the ball up quite well, but there was no goal danger.

Substitutions

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (on for Beto ’61) – 6

Chased the ball around but had just slightly greater effect than Beto. One nice headed opportunity went right at Andre Onana.

Andre Gomes (on for Doucouré ’61) – 5

After coming in, he hit a free kick into the wall but was unable to start a fightback.

Lewis Dobbin (on for Harrison, 1961) – 6

Okay on the left, but typified up this team’s current form in front of goal by firing the greatest Everton opportunity back across the six yard box when he could have just blasted it in from a Godfrey knock down.

Ashley Young (on for Garner ’75) – 6

Put a couple of good balls in from the right, but it was too late for the Toffees.

Youssef Chermiti (on for Mykolenko ’88) – 6

Dyche’s late debut was meaningless since there wasn’t enough time to make an impact.
