Raiders ink new contract with backup Ameer Abdullah
At several spots, the Las Vegas Raiders will have to make important decisions at the beginning of free agency. Josh Jacobs, the starting running back, is set to become an unrestricted free agent. Although there is presently uncertainty around Jacobs’ status, the Raiders have guaranteed that backup Ameer Abdullah will stay with the squad.
The running back, 31, is about to ink a new contract with the Raiders. Whether or if this signing will affect what happens to Jacobs is hard to predict. At this stage of his career, Abdullah doesn’t seem like a starter.
Abdullah appeared to be a bit part of the offence in Las Vegas. Despite only getting 15 touches for 89 yards and no touchdowns in the previous season, he participated in all 17 games. Since the 2021 season, when he was a member of both the Carolina Panthers and the Minnesota Vikings, he has not had more than 100 carries.
Last season, Jacobs averaged 3.5 yards per run on 233 carries for 805 yards and 6 touchdowns.
Jacobs was the league’s most productive running back before the 2023 year. In 2022, he was a member of the Raiders and had 1,653 yards and 12 touchdowns on 340 carries, which led the league.
Josh Jacobs, like New York Giants wide receiver Saquon Barkley, will be a free agency on March 13. But both running backs are aware that their salary has been significantly reduced. Teams are reluctant to pay running backs at the same level as they do wide receivers, quarterbacks, left tackles, pass rushers, and elite cover men.
