The Portuguese giants were handed a two-year suspended away fan ban by European football’s governing body following trouble in Toulouse.
Benfica, Rangers’ Europa League rivals, have received a warning from their own club executives that if their supporters don’t behave well at Ibrox this week, UEFA would bar them from attending their next away game in Europe.
After returning to Scotland with a 2-2 draw from the first leg in Lisbon, Rangers take on the Portuguese behemoths in Glasgow for the second leg of the Round of 16. However, UEFA just crushed Benfica by fining them £24,000 and prohibiting them from having any fans at away games for a two-year period after their supporters caused disruption during their most recent Europa League match in Toulouse. Furthermore, Benfica has done the extraordinary thing of alerting their own fans.
They declared: “We have been penalized by FIFA with a two-year suspension from selling tickets to its supporters for the upcoming European games that would take place away from home. The recent Europa League games in Toulouse resulted in flares being set off and objects being thrown, which led to UEFA making its judgment. The ruling also mandates that a 28,000 euro fee be paid right away.
“Benfica reiterates its call to its supporters to abide by the rules and abstain from actions that harm the club’s reputation and deprive the team of support that has always been essential and crucial for our players in light of UEFA’s ruling. This is just another obvious call to all supporters: back the group, stand up for the organization.”
