‘Who cares?’ Dons legend says Aberdeen fans should embrace Celtic icon.
The future of Neil Warnock as head coach of Aberdeen appears uncertain; should the Dons decide to replace him before the end of the year, legendary Celtic player Neil Lennon may take over.
Joe Harper, who spent two happy seasons with the Dandies, would be happy to have this appointment. Lennon is “the type of manager that Aberdeen need,” thus he encouraged supporters to set aside their rivalry, even though he understood that some Aberdeen supporters might be hesitant to name a Celts fan favorite.
“Lennon has revealed he is interested in the Aberdeen position, and the Reds should open talks to see if he is the right candidate to move the club forward,” Harper wrote in The Press and Journal.
“The Pittodrie board needs to take note and move when someone with Lennon’s resume indicates he is eager to lead Aberdeen. Given that Lennon is a former Celtic manager and player, some Aberdeen supporters would be opposed to his appointment. Does it matter?
“A Celtic icon, Billy McNeill was named Aberdeen’s manager in 1977 and left Pittodrie with great success. Lennon has the option to follow suit, and if he expresses interest in the role, Chairman Dave Cormack and his board should give it careful thought. He is a seasoned veteran who is well-versed in Scottish football.
“Lennon won four Scottish Cups and one League Cup while he was the Parkhead manager in charge.” Having guided Hibs to the Championship title
and back to the Scottish Premier League in 2017, he has also won trophies in his role as manager outside of Celtic. That is one of the strongest resumes of any manager in Scottish football. He is just the kind of boss Aberdeen needs.
