Alisher Usmanov’s £30 million sponsorship of the new Everton stadium, according to Jamie Carragher, was “a fiddle.”
Prior to the crisis in Ukraine, the Russian oligarch was a significant sponsor of the Toffees. As a result, he was forced to leave the club and they were left without his money.
This was a factor in the most recent FFP and PSR allegations, which resulted in the team being deducted six points. However, on March 8, Carragher engaged in a heated debate with a supporter regarding the original sponsorship money, calling it “a fiddle.”
According to him, Everton’s COVID losses were around £50–£100 million higher than those of any other team, since they don’t have the largest stadium or attract as many commercial sponsors.
“You’re not bringing in commercial revenue like United or Liverpool are.”
Carragher then enquired as to the nature of the sponsorship that the Premier League had rejected in their defence against PSR allegations. Carragher was not delighted to hear that USR was paying £30 million for the name rights to the new stadium.
“For naming rights, they paid £30 million? “Hey, check out this sponsorship—it’s hilarious,” he added.
What did they give you the £30 million for? It was the right of first dibs on the name. It was a violin. You understand that it was a violin.
Then, in a fit of laughter, he ordered the fan to “behave.”
Everton suffering due to Farhad Moshiri’s nonsense
The majority of publications at the time stated that Usmanov’s USR business had paid for the Bramley Moore Dock Stadium’s name rights for a period of ten years.
Nobody is sure anymore whether that was going to happen or not because the stadium is scheduled to open and no name has been announced as of yet, and Usmanov is still being ignored by the government because he isn’t participating in the war.
Given their relationship, Carragher’s claim that it’s a fiddle is a stretch, though. Farhad Moshiri was his boss.
However, in the end, that partnership has cost Everton absurd sums of money, caused them to have major on-field issues, and now given them six plus points this season alone.
Everton has suffered greatly, and it will be best if new owners who are suitable for the team take over as soon as possible so that we can get out of this terrible mess.
