Everton are surrounded by uncertainty currently at Goodison Park, with off-the-field issues in Merseyside continuing to dominate the talk around Sean Dyche’s side.
The Toffees face a potential two-point deduction in the near future, the Premier League has not yet approved 777 Partners’ takeover, and relegation is still a very real threat in the remaining months of the season.
Because of this, Everton is finding it extremely difficult to prepare for the summer transfer window. However, rumours of Toffees players leaving haven’t ceased, with players like Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana being earmarked for departure.
Due to strong interest from teams throughout Europe, especially Arsenal, Fabrizio Romano has hinted that there is a good probability the Belgian midfield player could depart Goodison at the end of the current campaign [Daily Briefing, 24 February].
While Eddie Howe searched for a new central midfield player to join his team in January, it was also reported that Newcastle scouts watched Onana; however, they were only prepared to pay a loan price [The Athletic, 2 February].
A recent development concerning Joelinton, a Brazilian midfielder, could, nevertheless, free up funds for the Magpies to sign Onana this summer.
Will Everton sell Amadou Onana during the summer transfer window?
Joelinton’s current contract is slated to expire at the conclusion of the following season, and Howe has said that Newcastle has yet to reach an agreement with him to prolong his stay at St James’ Park.
He stated, “We are still trying from the club side to reach an agreement with Joelinton over a new deal, we are desperate to keep him,” as reported by Romano on X on March 8.
“The situation hasn’t changed significantly, but we’re trying and working on it.”
Howe has acknowledged that there hasn’t been any “major” progress in either direction, despite his insistence that Newcastle is eager to lock the Brazilian down. In the event that Joelinton departs in the summer, the Magpies may try to move for Onana.
Everton fans will be hoping to increase their chances of retaining the Belgian at Goodison Park past the end of the season by seeing Newcastle’s top player sign a contract as soon as possible.
