What Sunderland coach Mike Dodds told his players after defeat to Leicester City

Jenson Seelt has explained what Mike Dodds has told his Sunderland team following another defeat.

Sunderland made it five defeats in a row on Tuesday night as they were narrowly beaten by Leicester City.

The Black Cats performed far better on Wearside, but Jamie Vardy took advantage of a subpar first 20 minutes to give the visitors all three points.

Now 10 points off of the playoff spots, Mike Dodds’ team might drop even further this weekend if they lose against Southampton, who now occupy fourth place in the league.

As of right now, Sunderland and Rotherham are the two most dysfunctional teams in the Championship; nevertheless, manager Jenson Seelt has acknowledged that the team and management believe they are about to turn things around.

“We have such a good group,” the Dutch defender stated in an interview with The Northern Echo.

“We’re not negative at all. The coach is talking to us and telling us to keep going with the progress we’re making and don’t let anything from the outside affect our focus. At the moment, we’re just trying to stay really close as a group.

“We feel as though we’re close to a win, and that’s what the manager has said to us as well. We need to keep fighting until the momentum switches our way, and hopefully that’s going to be soon.”

Are Sunderland on the verge of a win?

Sunderland would win against most other Championship teams if they performed as well as they did in the second half of their match against Leicester City.

Our inability to play well for the entire ninety minutes—or well at all, as of late—is the issue.

It’s nearly a given that players like Adil Aouchiche won’t do as well when he comes off the bench, even if we start with the squad that finished the game on Tuesday. We couldn’t find the back of the net even if we played beautifully for ninety minutes, so playing good isn’t the solution to our issues either.

We did look better against the Foxes, but that was the only glimmer of hope we have had for weeks now, and expecting us to pick up where we left off against Southampton seems like a big ask for these players. Especially given our atrocious record away from home.

One win in 13 games on the road won’t exactly fill the Black Cats with confidence this weekend.
