Prior to Thursday night’s match between Philippe Clement’s team and Benfica, some unpleasant behavior involving Rangers supporters occurred on Wednesday night, with the Scottish supporters being singled out. Although the newspaper Record reports on the “violent confrontations” at Lisbon’s Restauradores zone, it is pointed out that the Rangers supporters were first attacked by “casuals” who entered the hotel where the Scottish supporters were staying and began “throwing stones.”

They didn’t start the mess until they emerged to “fight back.” Diário de Notícias reports on the event as well, providing additional information and stating that Atalanta supporters engaged in physical combat with Rangers supporters. Rangers supporters were waiting for their team’s match against Benfica tonight, while Atalanta supporters had watched their team play Sporting in Lisbon on Wednesday night.

According to reports, the incident started at 11 p.m. and stopped when the police arrived. Fortunately, no serious injuries have been reported, and no arrests have been made either. Diário de Notícias notes that the Portuguese police and UEFA authorized the itinerary; the latter may now regret having supporters of two foreign clubs in town at the same time.
