‘Used like a puppet’: PL referees bemused by Clattenburg’s role

Following their loss to Liverpool, Mark Clattenburg was one of those with Nottingham Forest that pursued Paul Tierney in an effort to get answers, and his involvement has alarmed Premier League authorities.

Premier League referees are apparently perplexed by Mark Clattenburg‘s involvement at Nottingham Forest, with the former official attempting to scrutinise Paul Tierney’s choice following the club’s defeat to Liverpool, which puts them in danger of relegation.

Referee Tierney stopped the game by giving the ball to Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher while Forest was in possession, but Forest lost late in the game at the City Ground on Saturday. Liverpool eventually scored after a duration of one minute and fifty seconds.

There were questions about Clattenburg’s hiring at Forest, but it was thought that he would provide insight into the choices that were taken. However, based on his actions on Saturday, it appears that he will be in charge of the inquest when the City Ground team lost due to incorrect calls.

After the competition, Tierney declined to talk with Clattenburg. If they are included in the official records as the people chosen to sit on the team benches, staff members are permitted to talk with the referee following games. That list did not include Clattenburg, thus Tierney had every right to wave him off.

Paul Tierney was in the spotlight for the wrong reasons on Saturday

Clattenburg stated that in light of Tierney’s mistake, he will be requesting a meeting with the PGMOL. The official body responsible for officiating has acknowledged that the decision to return the ball to Liverpool was erroneous. Martin Cassidy, the CEO of Ref Support and a former Football League assistant, expresses concern that Clattenburg might be used as “a partisan tool to justify ref abuse.”

He expressed his real concern to PA that Clatts will be exploited as a puppet to legitimise abusive behaviour and indirectly justify it. I think more football teams should use the expertise of referees to explain the law at all levels of play.

The vast majority of football players are unaware of the rules of the game they are playing. I applaud such a position because this is especially pertinent at the professional level, which has always been a concern of mine. My concern is that the referee [analyst] may feel free to declare that the players were in error and that the referee was right, so using this position as a partisan means of rationalising improper behaviour.

“There is no doubt that Clattenburg is someone I greatly admire and has a great deal of credibility in this field, but the question that needs to be asked is: Does Clattenburg have the freedom to publicly question Forest’s behaviour for their unacceptable response to this incident?”

PGMOL CEO Howard Webb has hosted a show that describes the conversations between officials during games in an effort to be more open about the decision-making process. It’s likely that Webb will have to explain how and why Tierney made such a significant mistake.
