Rangers biggest ever wins including three 13-0 annihilations

Here, we examine the greatest Rangers victories in the team’s existence.

The spread of their record victory margins shows that Rangers has been a dominant force in the domestic scene since its founding in 1872.

Rangers set several amazing records in that area from 1877 to 1983; as of 2024, all of those records still intact.

Some Gers supporters may recall the 8-0 thumping of Hamilton Academical at Ibrox in the 2020–21 Scottish Premiership title-winning season led by Steven Gerrard’s team.

Of course, because of the COVID-19 pandemic at the time, fans made their memories in front of a TV screen. To put things into perspective, though, the astounding scoreline is insignificant in comparison to the joint records as a whole. The following statistics are all from Fitbastats.

Rangers’ joint-largest victories ever

Rangers’ greatest winning margin in Scottish Cup history is thirteen goals, which they accomplished three times in a row between 1877 and 1889.

Rangers won 13-0 against Possilpark, Uddingston, and Kelvinside Athletic in October 1877, November 1877, and September 1889, respectively.

Peter Campbell scored a hat-trick and four other players scored braces at Ibrox against Possilpark. Moses McNeil and Sam Ricketts both had goals, with the former netting the team’s first.

In November, after two rounds of the Scottish Cup, Rangers would humiliate Uddingston. In this one-sided match, Alex Marshall and James Watson helped themselves to four goals EACH.

Twelve years later, the Rangers equaled their greatest-ever victory against Kelvinside Athletic with to six different scored, including braces from Jimmy Henderson, John Allan, and Tom Wylie.

Rangers’ highest scoring total in a single game

There have been two occasions when Rangers have scored more than 13 goals in a single game. In the September 1883 Scottish Cup match, they defeated Whitehill 14–2, and in January 1934, they defeated Blairgowrie by the same score.

It is improbable that Rangers will ever surpass or even tie the record of 14 goals in a single game. The famous Bill Struth managed Rangers in the match against Blairgowrie.

Jimmy Fleming, his striker, also scored an absurd nine goals in the contest. It is still the most goals ever scored by a Rangers player in a single game, and Fleming used it to help him set the club mark for most goals scored in the Scottish Cup, which stands at 44.

1898 marked the Rangers’ record league victory.

When Rangers defeated Hibernian 10-0 on Christmas Eve in 1898, it became the team’s greatest Scottish League triumph ever.

Fitbastats indicates that 7,000 people attended the Ibrox match. Robert C. Hamilton scored two goals and Alec Smith scored four.

In addition to Jim Miller, Johnny Campbell, and John McPherson scoring goals, Neilly Gibson also scored a penalty.

That season, Rangers would go on to win the Scottish League title after winning each of the 18 games they played. The club has never done this again.

Rangers win a record-breaking European match.

In September 1983, Rangers’ greatest European triumph to date came against Valletta FC. With a hat-trick from John McDonald, the team won 10-0.

Rangers had already defeated Malta 8-0 in the first leg of the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Davie Cooper and Barry Ferguson’s brother Derek Ferguson were among the players involved in the 10-0 match.

Then, Rangers would fall to Porto on an overall basis in the second round. Manager John Greig would step down after just one month of the Valletta demolition project, and Jock Wallace would take over once more.
