‘One of the best number nines in the league’ – Sunderland boss Dodds hails Sargent

Josh Sargent, a striker for Norwich City, is regarded by many as one of the best in the Championship; Sunderland interim manager Mike Dodds concurs.

The American’s goal against the Black Cats was sufficient to give Norwich a crucial 1-0 victory on Saturday at Carrow Road, extending their ascent into the top six.

After missing the most of the season due to an ankle injury, Sargent has now scored 11 goals in 15 games this season and 8 in 11 since his comeback. This includes City’s difficult run in the fall.

The team’s campaign has taken a turn for the better since Sargent’s return, and Norwich has only lost one of the games he has started this year—away to Leeds United, who have won all of their games at Elland Road.

Dodds, who suffered at the hands of Sargent’s quality on Saturday, feels that Sargent’s quality made the difference in a close match at Carrow Road and he promises to turn around Sunderland’s dismal performance.

“They have one of the best number nines in the league, to be brutally honest,” Dodds stated at his pregame press conference. “You are unable to avoid that. I believe he has fifteen goals, or roughly that much. That must therefore be a factor.

“The truth is that sometimes the ball falls for you and sometimes it doesn’t, even if I hate to use this metaphor. We don’t feel like we’re getting the benefit of the doubt right now. You make your own fortunes, and being the kind of coach that I am, I prefer not to rely on that.

“We’ve had internal conversations with the players about that. All we have to do is keep showing up and working twice as hard every day. One outcome will transform our fortunes if we adhere to our procedures and work ethic. Hopefully, things will get better from there.”
