Former Celtic manager Lennon admits he’s ‘very much interested’ in Aberdeen job

Neil Lennon, the former Celtic manager, has stated that he would still like another chance to manage Aberdeen when the position is reopened at the end of the current campaign.

Prior to Neil Warnock’s temporary takeover at Pittodrie, the Northern Irishman’s name was associated with the position.

Favored by Reds fans polled on their thoughts, Lennon had entered the competition to succeed Steve Crosby as the next head coach of the Irish Republic. He was very nearly the winner of the post, but former Manchester United player John O’Shea defeated him. O’Shea has taken on interim leadership, and in the early half of April, the FAI will name Stephen Kenny’s successor.

Ironically, the Dons are still searching for their first victory under the Englishman, despite Warnock overseeing a miserable season in Granite City. Their winless Premiership streak now stands at ten games after their 2-1 setback last weekend. For a team that has only won six of its 28 league games this season, it’s worrying times.

While the Aberdeen board does its due diligence, the Reds will name a new permanent manager in the summer and continue their search for a long-term replacement for Barry Robson. As chairman of Pittodrie, US-based Scottish businessman Dave Cormack has named five bosses, and he is under intense pressure to make the right managerial decision now.

Lennon acknowledges that the prospect of going back to the big time as Aberdeen’s manager is alluring and might tempt him to enter management once more. Additionally, he thinks he can lead Aberdeen back up the Scottish Premiership table, just as he did when he was at Easter Road with Hibs, leading them into the top flight from the Championship after a three-year absence, as well as into a top-four position and Europa League qualification in the process.

Lennon stated: “When the Aberdeen position became available, I was linked to it, but I couldn’t really take that on because I was still working on the Republic of Ireland process at the time.
