“Every day, aggressive messages” – Everton player’s agent on constant abuse being received

Many people have been using social media as a forum to deliver nasty remarks to football players, and it seems that this issue is becoming worse every year.

Melissa Onana, the sister and agent of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, is involved in a campaign to draw attention to – and, obviously, try and stop – the more general abuse directed at everyone in football. Usually, these are the biggest names we hear about in relation to this.

Melissa Onana and former Tottenham footballer Toby Alderweireld have been endorsing ComeTogether.be, an initiative to stop abuse and spread awareness.

She has talked about the frequent abuse the Everton player receives as part of that.

Quoted by HLN, Melissa Onana said: Every day we receive quite aggressive messages. Amadou has been criticised since he was a child. I remember when we went to small villages with the provincial team of Anderlecht, he was constantly being insulted or there was racism. That in itself is not a new fact. I have often had to control myself when I heard such an ignorant figure shouting something on the sidelines.

“The world is different now. Amadou is seldom, if ever, the target of personal insults. But it moves quickly online. Users can make anonymous, pseudonymous profiles on Twitter and Instagram with the sole purpose of threatening or insulting others. Their deeds have no repercussions. Those platforms seem overly lenient to me.

Melissa Onana thinks social media companies ought to be doing more to filter out hate speech, particularly racist content, without requiring users to report it.

Numerous other people have attempted that effort in the past, and ComeTogether.be’s inclusion will increase the pressure.
